top-news

Big news shaking the nation...! Tahawwur Rana, a key figure behind the deadly 26/11 Mumbai attacks is finally on his way back to India from the US. A special flight carrying him took off yesterday and he’s set to face justice on Indian soil. What happens next.? Let’s break it down.!

Details & Context

The countdown is over—Rana’s return marks a huge win for India after years of effort. On Wednesday, April 9th, 2025 at 7:10 PM IST, a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) boarded a special plane with Rana in the US. They’re landing in Delhi today, Thursday, April 10th around noon.

- Who is Rana.?: A Pakistani-origin Canadian, Rana helped plan the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that killed 166 people. He worked closely with David Coleman Headley, the mastermind who mapped out the targets.

- The Attack: On November 26th, 2008 10 Pakistani terrorists stormed Mumbai via sea, hitting iconic spots like the Taj Hotel. Only one, Ajmal Kasab was caught alive and later executed.

- Rana’s Role: Before the attack, Rana visited Mumbai from November 11th – 21st, 2008, scouting locations and passing info to Headley. He was jailed in the US for years but India kept pushing to bring him back.

Now, with US President Donald Trump’s nod in February 2025, Rana’s extradition is a done deal. The US Supreme Court rejected his last plea to stay, sealing his fate.

Quotes

An NIA official said, “Rana’s arrival is a step toward justice for 26/11 victims. We’re ready to take him into custody.”

A Mumbai resident shared, “After so long, seeing a mastermind face trial here feels like closure.”

Trump announced earlier, “Rana’s going back to India to face justice—evil won’t escape!”

Additional Information

The Home Ministry and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval are keeping a sharp eye on every move. Once Rana lands, the NIA will arrest him officially and lock him up in Delhi’s Tihar Jail where tight security is already in place. His trial will happen in a special NIA court in Delhi—not Mumbai—focusing on charges like conspiracy and terrorism. India’s long fight paid off after Trump’s administration backed the extradition, ending Rana’s legal tricks in US courts.
