A 15 year old girl ended her life by jumping from the 20th floor of an apartment in Bengaluru. The tragic incident occurred after her mother restricted her from using her mobile phone ahead of exams. The deceased identified as Avantika Chaurasia was a Class 10 student and had been warned by her mother to focus on studies instead of spending time on her phone.
Details and Context
The incident took place in the Kadugodi police station area on Wednesday. According to police sources Avantika’s family originally hails from Madhya Pradesh. Her father is an engineer and her mother is a homemaker. The girl was studying in a private CBSE school in Bengaluru and had reportedly scored low in her test exams.
As final exams were scheduled to begin on February 15th, her mother urged her to concentrate on studies. However Avantika was spending more time on her phone which led to an argument. Her mother repeatedly asked her to stop wasting time and focus on revision. Moments later in a fit of rage the girl ran to the terrace and jumped off the 20th floor. She died on the spot due to the impact.
Police arrived at the scene and began an investigation. A case of unnatural death has been registered but her parents formal statement is yet to be recorded. Further details are awaited.

This is not the first such incident in Bengaluru. On February 4th a 24 year old postgraduate student at Bengaluru University was found dead in her hostel room at the Jnana Bharathi campus. She was in her third semester of a Kannada language postgraduate course.
In another case a 19 year old BSc nursing student from Kerala, Anamika Vineet was found dead in her hostel room in Ramanagara. Her parents alleged that excessive academic pressure from the college authorities forced her to take such a drastic step.

Incidents like these highlight the growing mental health concerns among students. The pressure of academic performance coupled with restrictions on personal space can sometimes lead to tragic outcomes. Experts emphasize the importance of communication, emotional support and professional counselling for students facing stress and anxiety.
