Deadly GB Syndrome Spreads to Kolkata, A 22 Year Old Man Dies.

A new health scare has hit Kolkata as GB Syndrome (Guillain-Barré Syndrome) claims the life of a 22 year old man. The deadly nerve disorder which first surfaced in Maharashtra in late January 2025 is now spreading rapidly, raising public concern.
What Happened.?
Khairul Sheikh a 22 year old trainee technologist at NRS Medical College fell victim to this rare condition. After completing his training he joined a private company.
- Early Symptoms: In early February Khairul developed a fever. By February 12th he experienced severe diarrhea and soon after the lower part of his body became paralysed.
- Hospital Journey: Initially admitted to a private hospital his condition worsened leading to his transfer to RG Kar Medical College where he was placed in the Critical Care Unit (CCU). Unfortunately he could not survive.
The Spread of GB Syndrome, From Maharashtra to Bengal
The first reported case of GB Syndrome in 2025 emerged in Maharashtra. The disease spread quickly with over 100 cases reported in Pune alone.
- February Stats: By mid-February Maharashtra had identified 149 suspected cases out of which 124 were confirmed as GB Syndrome.
- Deaths: The death toll recently rose by two adding to the growing fear.
- Southern and Eastern India: As weeks passed the infection spread to southern states and eventually reached West Bengal now claiming its first victim in Kolkata.
What is GB Syndrome.?
GB Syndrome is a rare but serious autoimmune disorder that attacks the nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis.
- Key Symptoms
- Numbness and tingling in legs or waist
- Gradual muscle weakness
- Difficulty walking or speaking
- Paralysis of facial muscles
- Breathing difficulties as lung muscles weaken
- Medical Costs: Treating GB Syndrome requires expensive IVIG injections each costing around INR 20,000. Multiple doses are needed for recovery adding financial stress to families.

Doctors Concerns
Health experts warn that GB Syndrome is now a growing threat in West Bengal. Though rare the rising cases indicate an urgent need for awareness and early medical intervention. Dr. Anirban Das a Neurologist, says,
“This disease weakens the immune system and once it attacks the nerves it can cause paralysis within days. Early treatment is crucial.”
The spread of GB Syndrome from Maharashtra to Kolkata is a wake-up call for health authorities. With expensive treatments and increasing cases, urgent measures are needed to control the outbreak and support affected families.
