Bangladesh Burning: Media Offices Torched and Journalists Trapped as Pre-Election Chaos Explodes

§  Dhaka in Flames: The Fourth Estate Under Attack

Dhaka, Bangladesh: The fragile peace in Bangladesh has shattered completely. On Thursday night, the streets of Dhaka resembled a war zone as violent mobs targeted the country’s most prominent media houses, setting them ablaze and trapping terrified journalists inside.

With the general election scheduled for February 12, the nation is teetering on the edge of total anarchy. The trigger for this latest wave of violence was the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent face of the Inqilab Mancha and a key figure in the anti-Hasina student movement. Hadi, who was shot at a public rally last Friday, succumbed to his injuries, unleashing a firestorm of rage among his supporters.

The capital saw horrific scenes as the offices of @ProthomAlo and @TheDailyStar—two of Bangladesh’s leading newspapers—were ransacked and torched. As flames engulfed the buildings, journalists were seen fleeing to rooftops, screaming for help, while the army scrambled to restore order.

Details & Context: A Night of Terror for Journalists

The violence began late Thursday night in the Karwan Bazar and Shahbag areas of the capital.

The Attack on @ProthomAlo
Eyewitnesses report that a large group of agitators forced their way into the Prothom Alo head office. They vandalized furniture, looted equipment and then set the ground floor on fire.

·       The Trap: As the fire spread rapidly upwards, staff members were trapped on the upper floors.

·       The Rescue: Firefighters faced severe delays due to the massive crowds blocking the streets. Eventually, cranes were used to rescue journalists from the roof in a dramatic late-night operation.

@TheDailyStar Targeted
Almost simultaneously, the office of @TheDailyStar, the country’s leading English-language daily, was also attacked. The mob set the building on fire after extensive vandalism. A senior executive of the newspaper was reportedly physically assaulted during the chaos.

Army Intervention
It wasn’t until 2:00 AM that firefighters could fully access the sites, supported by a heavy deployment of the Bangladesh Army. While most staff members escaped with their lives, the psychological trauma and physical destruction are immense.

The Trigger: Who Was Sharif Osman Hadi.?

To understand the rage, one must understand the symbol. Sharif Osman Hadi was not just a spokesperson for the Inqilab Mancha; he was a revolutionary icon for the youth who opposed the previous Sheikh Hasina regime.

·       The Incident: Hadi was shot in broad daylight during a public meeting in a crowded Dhaka area last Friday.

·       The Aftermath: His death in Singapore (where he was likely taken for treatment) has been the catalyst. His body is scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on Friday at 3:50 PM with a massive funeral prayer (Janaza) planned for Saturday at Manik Mia Avenue.

His supporters, now referring to themselves as “Osman-panthis” (followers of Osman) have launched a nationwide campaign of arson and vandalism, targeting not just media houses but also Awami League offices across various cities.

Impact Analysis: The Anti-India Turn

A worrying dimension of this unrest is the sharp rise in anti-India sentiment. The mob violence has not been limited to domestic targets.

Diplomatic Scare
On Thursday night, hardliners reportedly threw bricks and stones at the residence of the Indian Assistant High Commissioner. Anti-India slogans are being chanted in various rallies with agitators accusing India of interfering in Bangladesh’s internal politics.

Election Uncertainty
With the general election less than two months away (February 12), the feasibility of a free and fair vote is now in question.

·       Media Silenced: By attacking the press, the mobs are dismantling the machinery needed for election transparency.

·       Security Failure: The inability of the police to protect high-profile locations suggests a security vacuum.

·       Radicalization: The rise of hardline groups threatens to turn the election into a violent power struggle rather than a democratic process.

Key Facts Summary

·       Event: Arson attacks on Prothom Alo and The Daily Star offices

·       Trigger: Death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi

·       Casualties: Journalists injured; no deaths reported in media attacks yet

·       Diplomatic Incident: Attack on Indian Assistant High Commissioner’s residence

·       Election Date: February 12, 2026 (Upcoming)

·       Key Figure: Muhammad Yunus (Chief Adviser)

Conclusion: A Country on the Brink

As Friday dawns, the fires may have been extinguished but the embers of rage are burning hotter than ever. Bangladesh is facing a triple crisis: a political vacuum, a breakdown of law and order and a diplomatic standoff with its largest neighbor.

The funeral of Sharif Osman Hadi on Saturday is expected to draw hundreds of thousands. Authorities are bracing for what could be the most dangerous weekend in the country’s recent history.

If the interim government cannot restore order immediately, the February 12 election may become a casualty of the streets.
