§  Sushant Singh Rajput family to challenge CBI closure report that cleared Rhea Chakraborty. Lawyer Varun Singh calls it ‘eyewash’ with missing documents. Get latest updates on SSR death case 2025

SSR CBI Closure Report: Nearly five years after Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s mysterious death shook the nation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a closure report in the case, giving a clean chit to his former girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and her family. However, Sushant’s family has rejected this report outright, calling it nothing but a “farce” and “eyewash”. The family has announced they will challenge the CBI’s findings in court, alleging that crucial evidence and documents have been deliberately withheld.

The 34-year-old actor was found hanging in his Bandra apartment in Mumbai on June 14, 2020, triggering one of India’s most controversial and polarizing investigations. What followed was a media frenzy, public outrage and accusations against Rhea Chakraborty ranging from abetment to suicide to financial fraud.

What Does the CBI Closure Report Say.?

The CBI submitted its closure report to a special court in Mumbai in March 2025, concluding that Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide and no foul play was involved. The report categorically cleared Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik Chakraborty and her parents of all charges including illegal confinement, abetment to suicide and financial embezzlement.

·       Key Findings from the CBI Closure Report

o   Timeline of Events: Between June 8 and June 14, 2020, none of the accused persons stayed or lived with Sushant. Rhea and Showik left his Bandra flat on June 8, 2020 and did not return thereafter. During this period, Sushant had no communication with Rhea except one WhatsApp conversation with Showik on June 10 at 2:41 PM.

o   Sushant’s Sister Stayed With Him: The report reveals that Sushant’s elder sister, Meetu Singh, stayed with him from June 8 to June 12, 2020. His manager Shruti Modi had not visited the house since February 2020 due to a leg fracture.

o   No Financial Fraud: The CBI found no evidence that Rhea embezzled Sushant’s funds or dishonestly took possession of his property. When Rhea left on June 8, she only took her Apple laptop and wristwatch, both of which were gifts from Sushant. The report states that Sushant considered Rhea “part of the family” and any expenses on her were made with the knowledge of his accountant and lawyer.

o   No Abetment to Suicide: The investigation found no evidence that Rhea or anyone else illegally confined, threatened or abetted Sushant to commit suicide. Claims that Rhea threatened to reveal Sushant’s medical records were dismissed as “hearsay” with no supporting evidence.

o   AIIMS Forensic Report: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) forensic team, headed by Dr. Sudhir Gupta, unanimously concluded that Sushant’s death was suicide without any medical doubt. The forensic analysis ruled out poisoning, strangling and murder. The cause of death was determined to be asphyxia due to antemortem hanging.

Why is Sushant’s Family Rejecting the Report.?

Sushant Singh Rajput’s family, represented by advocate Varun Singh has vehemently rejected the CBI’s closure report, calling it “incomplete,” “superficial” and based on “shoddy investigation”. The family plans to file a protest petition in court to challenge the findings.

·       Family’s Major Concerns

o   Missing Critical Documents: Advocate Varun Singh stated that the CBI failed to submit crucial supporting documents including chat records, technical data, witness statements, bank statements, medical records and forensic evidence along with the closure report. He emphasized that without these documents, the closure report holds no legal validity.

o   Incomplete Investigation: The family alleges that the CBI has been unable to produce the complete set of documents even after seven months, indicating significant gaps in the investigation. Singh pointed out that the report only states “the possibility of suicide cannot be ruled out,” which shows the conclusion is uncertain rather than definitive.

o   Deliberate Withholding of Evidence: Despite six court orders from the Patna court directing the CBI to furnish all annexures and supporting materials, the agency has failed to comply. This has made it impossible for the family to file an effective protest petition.

o   Unresolved Questions: The family maintains that their original allegations of illegal confinement, cheating and abetment to suicide have not been properly investigated. They believe crucial evidence has been ignored or suppressed.

Advocate Varun Singh declared, “This is nothing but an eyewash. If CBI really wanted to come out with the truth, it would have submitted all the supporting case documents including chats, technical records, statements of witnesses, medical records, etc. in the court along with the final closure report, which they have not done”.

Rhea Chakraborty’s Ordeal: From Witch-Hunt to Clean Chit

Rhea Chakraborty became the face of one of India’s most intense media trials following Sushant’s death. She was subjected to relentless television trials, online abuse and vilification on social media platforms even before formal investigations concluded.

Rhea spent 27 days in jail after being arrested on drug-related charges by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Her brother Showik Chakraborty also faced imprisonment. The siblings struggled to return to normal life as netizens continued to target them on every social media post.

Rhea’s lawyer, Satish Maneshinde, welcomed the CBI’s closure report, stating that she “endured untold miseries for no fault of hers”. He expressed gratitude to the CBI for thoroughly investigating every aspect of the case and criticized the “false narrative” propagated by social media and electronic media.

Following the closure report, Showik Chakraborty shared a cryptic message on social media featuring apparel from their fashion brand with the embroidery “Peace over projection”. Rhea also reshared the post, seemingly signaling relief after years of public scrutiny.

The Road Ahead: Legal Battle Continues

The next hearing on the CBI’s closure report is scheduled for December 20, 2025 in a Patna court. Sushant Singh Rajput’s family remains determined to challenge the report and continue their fight for what they believe is justice.

The case remains one of India’s most polarizing investigations with the family alleging a cover-up and the CBI maintaining that its investigation was thorough and conclusive.

·       As this legal battle unfolds, the question remains: Will the family’s protest petition lead to further investigation or will the closure report be accepted by the court.? The nation continues to watch as this high-profile case enters yet another chapter.
