Zubeen Garg Death Case: In a major development in the Zubeen Garg death investigation, the Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) has returned from Singapore with promising updates after meeting with Singaporean authorities and the Indian High Commission. SIT chief and CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta announced on Friday that Singapore Police have assured them of sharing crucial evidence—including CCTV footage and witness statements—within the next 10 days.

The two-member team, comprising Gupta and Titabor Co-District SP Tarun Goel, spent four days in Singapore examining the circumstances surrounding the beloved Assamese singer’s mysterious death on September 19, 2025. Meanwhile, Zubeen’s widow Garima Saikia Garg recorded her statement at the CID headquarters in Guwahati on Friday, as the investigation intensifies with over 70 people questioned and seven individuals arrested.

Singapore Authorities Promise Swift Cooperation

·       Why are AASU and BJP both protesting.?

·       What did wife Garima Garg say about the death.?

·       Why is Singapore taking 90 days for investigation.?

·       Who are the 7 people arrested in Zubeen Garg case.?

Speaking to media on Friday, DGP Munna Prasad Gupta revealed that the SIT held “very fruitful” meetings with a five-member high-level delegation from the Singapore Police Force (SPF). The discussions focused on legal assistance under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) which India invoked on September 30 to facilitate international cooperation in the case.

“We met the Indian High Commissioner in Singapore and discussed all legal assistance required. We also had a discussion with Singapore Police and it was a very fruitful meeting,” Gupta stated. He emphasized that both police forces deliberated on investigations being carried out in their respective countries and exchanged critical information related to the case.

The Assam Police team visited all key locations linked to the tragedy including the site where Zubeen allegedly drowned, the hotel where he stayed (Pan Pacific Hotel) and the yacht hired by the Assam Association Singapore. “We could visit the place of occurrence and even the locations Zubeen Garg had visited during his stay in Singapore,” Gupta confirmed.

Critical Evidence Expected: CCTV Footage and Statements

The SIT has formally requested CCTV footage from the hotel and other locations Zubeen visited before his death. However, Singapore’s legal framework requires that such evidence be obtained through official police channels rather than directly.

“We sought the statement of the yacht pilot and one member of Assam Association Singapore. As they are citizens of Singapore, it will have to be done through a legal process. They have assured us to provide us with the statements in the next 10 days,” Gupta explained.

The Singapore Police will record statements from several Singapore nationals connected to the case and contact the Assam team within the promised timeframe. “They told us that their investigation would take around 90 days but they would share some of the information and evidence within 10 days,” Gupta added.

Singapore authorities had already shared the first autopsy report with the Assam Police through the Indian High Commission on October 1, which DGP Gupta called “very important from the investigation point of view”.

70+ People Questioned, 7 Arrested Including Police Officer

The investigation has made significant progress on Indian soil with the SIT questioning nearly 70 people connected to Zubeen and the North East India Festival where he was performing. Out of 11 non-resident Indians (NRIs) linked to the case, statements from 10 individuals have been recorded.

·       Seven people have been arrested so far and are currently in judicial custody. The arrested individuals include

o   Shyamkanu Mahanta - Chief organizer of the North East India Festival

o   Siddharth Sharma - Zubeen’s manager since 2014

o   Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta - Band members

o   Suspended DSP Sandipan Garg - Zubeen’s cousin and Assam Police officer

o   Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya - Zubeen’s personal security officers (PSOs)

The arrests of the two PSOs came after investigators discovered financial transactions exceeding Rs 1.1 crore in their bank accounts. “A huge amount of money was found in their bank accounts that could not be justified by their salaries, leading to the registration of a disproportionate assets case by the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell under the Prevention of Corruption Act,” DGP Gupta revealed.

All seven are facing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) including murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy and causing death by negligence.

Wife Garima Garg Records Emotional Statement

On Friday, Garima Saikia Garg, accompanied by Zubeen’s sister Palme Borthakur, arrived at the CID headquarters to record her statement. This comes after weeks of her emotional public appeals demanding justice for her late husband.

In earlier statements, Garima expressed her anguish, saying, “We want to know what happened to him, why it happened and how this negligence could be allowed to happen.? We want answers”. She has been particularly critical of those present on the yacht, questioning why they didn’t prevent Zubeen from entering the water when they knew about his medical condition.

“Why did they not lift him from the water when they knew he was not in a condition to swim.? They could have done so, as it was very easy to distract him,” Garima stated. She revealed that Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma was aware that the singer could not go near fire or water as it could trigger his epileptic seizures.

Garima has urged fans and supporters to continue demanding justice through social media with the hashtag #JusticeForZubeenGarg. “Please pray for justice for Zubeen. We have to know what really happened to him. I want justice,” she said through tears at Zubeen’s cremation site.

Political Firestorm: BJP and Congress Clash Over Investigation

Zubeen Garg’s death has triggered an unprecedented political battle in Assam with the ruling BJP and opposition Congress locked in fierce confrontation ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Both parties are leveraging Zubeen’s legacy and iconic songs to connect with voters, sparking debates about politicization of his death.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has been leading candlelight marches and organizing condolence events under the banner #JusticeForZubeenGarg. He has criticized the BJP-led Assam government for the slow pace of investigation and lack of transparency.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has fired back, accusing the Congress of politicizing the tragedy. “I welcome Rahul Gandhi to Assam but his absence at the time of Zubeen Garg’s cremation speaks volumes. The Congress is clearly looking at political mileage ahead of the elections,” Sarma stated.

The Chief Minister has also launched the BJP’s own ‘Nyay Yatra’ demanding swift and transparent investigation, while assuring that a chargesheet will be filed on time. “We will file a chargesheet and the court will deliver justice. The Assam government and I are confident that the SIT will do a good job,” Sarma declared.

Both parties have been quoting Zubeen’s iconic works—from his anthem “Hur Hur Hurai De” calling for unity among Assam’s indigenous communities, to his dialogue from the movie Kanchanjungha: “I have no community, no religion. I am free. I am Kanchenjunga”—to shape their political narratives.

AASU and Student Bodies Demand Justice, Slam Political Exploitation

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) have staged massive ‘Nyay Rallies’ across all district headquarters, demanding justice while urging political parties to stop exploiting Zubeen’s death for electoral gains.

AASU President Utpal Sarma sharply criticized the BJP government’s street protests despite being in power. “They say double-engine government. A party in power is hitting the streets to seek justice. They should answer two questions: Whom are they protesting against.? And from whom are they seeking justice.?”.

“Do not politicise Zubeen’s death,” has been AASU’s clear message to all political parties. “Zubeen da belongs to the people, not to any party. Let his art unite Assam—not divide it,” said AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharjya.

Thousands joined rallies in Guwahati, Nalbari, Jorhat and Dibrugarh with protesters hanging effigies of arrested suspects and demanding fast-track investigation. “This is not just anger—it’s anguish. Assam has lost its voice and justice cannot be delayed any longer,” said AJYCP Vice President Shiv Kalita.

Singapore Police: No Foul Play, But Investigation Continues

The Singapore Police Force (SPF), conducting its own independent investigation, stated on October 17 that preliminary findings suggested no foul play in Zubeen’s death. However, they emphasized that investigations may take another three months before findings are submitted to the State Coroner.

“The police are committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation into the case and this takes time. We seek the patience and understanding of the parties involved. Meanwhile, we urge the public not to speculate and spread unverified information,” the SPF stated.

If the State Coroner determines a Coroner’s Inquiry is necessary, it will be a fact-finding process led by a judicial officer to establish the cause and circumstances of death with findings made public upon conclusion.

What Happened on September 19.?

Zubeen Garg, 52, died under mysterious circumstances on September 19 while reportedly swimming in the sea off Singapore. He had traveled to the city-state to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival and was staying at the Pan Pacific Hotel.

On the fateful day, Zubeen was aboard a yacht booked by members of the Assam Association Singapore. According to investigations, he allegedly drowned near an island while swimming. Video footage from his final moments shows he appeared “very exhausted,” according to his wife Garima.

His mortal remains were flown back to Delhi and then transported to Guwahati, where mourning fans paid their last respects. He was cremated with full state honors in Kamarkuchi village, about 20 km from Guwahati.

The tragedy sparked widespread grief across Assam and led to over 60 FIRs being filed demanding thorough investigation.

Timeline: 90-Day Race Against Time

DGP Munna Prasad Gupta emphasized the urgency of completing the investigation within the prescribed timeframe. “We emphasised that we need their cooperation in a time-bound manner since our investigation must be completed within 90 days,” he told media after returning from Singapore.

Under Indian law, the SIT must submit its chargesheet within three months. “We are working day and night to complete the investigation within the prescribed timeframe,” Gupta assured.

·       The SIT chief made a public appeal: “I want to appeal to the people who have any relevant information of Zubeen Garg or any chats with him prior to his death to come out and share those information with us”.

With Singapore evidence expected within 10 days and the investigation entering its critical phase, Assam waits with bated breath for answers about what truly happened to their beloved cultural icon.
