Heatstroke Prevention | South Bengal Heatwave Alert, Kolkata Safety Tips to Beat the Heat

top-news

Kolkata and South Bengal are in the grip of a scorching heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40°C and high humidity making life tough. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for four districts but relief is expected with thunderstorms and rain from Sunday. This guide provides essential heatwave safety tips for Kolkata residents to stay cool, hydrated and protected tailored for the city’s unique challenges.

Details & Context
The IMD has declared a heatwave warning for four South Bengal districts—Bankura, West Bardhaman, Birbhum and West Medinipur—alongside Malda in North Bengal. Other districts like Purulia, Jhargram, East Bardhaman and Murshidabad are also facing heatwave-like conditions. Kolkata is enduring intense heat and discomfort, with Friday’s “feels-like” temperature reaching 40°C due to high humidity (61-87%). Dry western winds are fuelling this heatwave, which is set to continue until Saturday. Daytime temperatures may rise by 2°C, and night time temperatures by 1°C, offering little respite.

Kolkata’s concrete-heavy urban environment traps heat, making daily activities like commuting or working outdoors gruelling. Vulnerable groups including the elderly, children and those with health issues, face heightened risks of heatstroke and dehydration. Relief is expected soon, with thunderstorms and lightning forecast for western districts like West Medinipur, Jhargram and South 24 Parganas starting Saturday afternoon. From Sunday to Wednesday, light to moderate rain with gusty winds (30-50 km/h, up to 60 km/h in some areas) is likely across Bengal, potentially bringing Kalbaisakhi-like storms. North Bengal’s upper districts, including Darjeeling and Kalimpong will see scattered rain and windy conditions from Saturday.

Quotes

·      Dr. Rakesh Mondal, a Kolkata physician, warns, “Heatstroke can strike quickly in this weather. Stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure.”

·      Street vendor Lila Das shares, “The heat is unbearable and business is down. I’m praying for the rain to cool things off.”

·      IMD official Arjun Sen says, “The heatwave will subside with rain starting Sunday. Until then, follow safety measures to protect yourself.”

Additional Information
Here are 10 critical heatwave safety tips for Kolkata residents

·      Drink Plenty of Water: Aim for 3-4 liters daily. Carry a water bottle and sip coconut water or ORS to replace electrolytes.

·      Dress for Heat: Wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothes. Use wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and umbrellas to block the sun.

·      Avoid Peak Heat: Stay indoors from 11 AM to 4 PM. If outside, take frequent breaks in shaded areas.

·      Keep Your Home Cool: Close curtains during the day, use fans or ACs and ensure good ventilation.

·      Eat Light and Hydrating: Opt for water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber and yogurt. Avoid heavy, spicy meals.

·      Recognise Heatstroke Signs: Look for symptoms like dizziness, nausea or confusion. Seek immediate medical help if noticed.

·      Protect At-Risk Groups: Check on kids, the elderly and pets, ensuring they stay cool and hydrated.

·      Use Sunscreen: Apply SPF 30+ to prevent sunburn on exposed skin.

·      Limit Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous tasks during the hottest hours. Exercise early in the morning or evening.

·      Stay Informed: Follow IMD updates and local advisories for the latest weather alerts.

Kolkata’s civic authorities are setting up water kiosks in busy areas like Esplanade and Shyambazar. Public cooling centers, such as libraries or community halls, are available for those without air conditioning. As rain approaches, secure outdoor items and avoid open spaces during thunderstorms to stay safe from lightning and strong winds.

Impact Analysis
The heatwave is disrupting life across Kolkata. Schools have shifted to online classes and outdoor workers like hawkers and labourers are struggling with reduced earnings and health risks. Hospitals report a 15-25% surge in heat-related illnesses including dehydration and heat exhaustion. Power outages in areas like Behala and Tollygunge are making it harder to stay cool, as fans and coolers fail. Small businesses, particularly food stalls are seeing fewer customers due to the oppressive heat.

The upcoming rain, while welcome, brings challenges. Gusty winds and potential Kalbaisakhi storms could damage property, disrupt power lines or cause accidents. Kolkata’s drainage issues may lead to water logging in low-lying areas like Ultadanga or Kestopur during heavy rain. Long-term, recurring heatwaves highlight the need for climate-resilient solutions, such as more urban greenery, better ventilation in buildings and improved power infrastructure.

Kolkata’s heatwave is a tough challenge but with practical safety measures, residents can stay protected until the rains bring relief. Staying hydrated, avoiding midday heat and preparing for thunderstorms are key to navigating this extreme weather. As climate change drives more frequent heatwaves, adopting sustainable habits and urban planning is essential for a safer future. Stay cool, stay safe and get ready for the rain.!
