Weather Update | Kolkata Sizzles in Heatwave.....! Essential Safety Tips & Weather Updates for April 2025

top-news

Kolkata is turning into a furnace this April 2025, with temperatures soaring and sticky humidity making life tough. South Bengal braces for a blistering heatwave while North Bengal gears up for thunderstorms and showers. Don’t sweat it—our guide offers practical safety tips to keep Kolkata residents cool, hydrated and safe during this extreme weather.

Details & Context

Bengal’s Weather Rollercoaster

·      Starting Tuesday, April 21st, 2025 South Bengal including Kolkata will see temperatures climb sharply by 4-6°C. Kolkata’s daytime highs could hit 36°C today and soar to 37-38°C by the weekend. Districts like Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum and West Bardhaman are set to face heatwave conditions from Wednesday to Friday. High humidity (64-84%) will make it feel even hotter, with dry, scorching winds—akin to the ‘loo’—taking over by midweek. Some South Bengal districts may see scattered rain and thunderstorms by the weekend, offering slight relief.

·      In North Bengal, temperatures will stay steady but the weather will be lively. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri will face light to moderate rain with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) on Tuesday. Wednesday brings rain across all North Bengal districts, with storms easing by Thursday. Scattered showers may continue in some areas.

·      Kolkata’s nights are already warm at 29.1°C (3°C above normal) and daytime heat will feel worse due to humidity. By Friday or Saturday, the ‘feels-like’ temperature could make the city feel like an oven, pushing residents to their limits.

Quotes

Voices from Bengal

·      “The heat is suffocating and the humidity makes it worse. I carry a water bottle everywhere,” says Priya Mondal, a Kolkata shopkeeper.

·      “In Darjeeling, the rain is a relief but we’re worried about lightning striking the hills,” shares Sanjay Rai, a local farmer.

Safety Tips for Kolkata Residents

With Kolkata facing intense heat and humidity, here’s how to stay safe and comfortable

·      Hydrate Constantly: Drink water, coconut water or ORS regularly. Skip sugary drinks, caffeine or alcohol which can dehydrate you.

·      Dress for the Heat: Wear loose, light-coloured cotton clothes. Use hats, umbrellas or sunglasses to shield from the sun.

·      Avoid Midday Sun: Stay indoors or in shaded areas between 11 AM and 4 PM. If outdoors, take frequent breaks and stay hydrated.

·      Cool Your Space: Use fans, air conditioners or damp towels. Keep windows and curtains closed during the day to block heat.

·      Spot Heatstroke Signs: Look for dizziness, nausea, headaches or rapid pulse. Move to a cool area, sip water and seek medical help if symptoms worsen.

·      Protect the Vulnerable: Check on elderly neighbours, kids or those with health issues. Ensure they stay cool and hydrated.

·      Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates for sudden changes, especially if weekend rain hits Kolkata.

Pro Tip: Carry a small spray bottle with water to mist your face for instant relief during outdoor errands.

Impact Analysis

How the Heatwave Affects Kolkata

·      The heatwave will hit Kolkata hard. Outdoor workers, like rickshaw pullers and construction labourers, face higher risks of dehydration and heatstroke. Schools may shift to early hours or online classes to protect students. Power grids could strain under increased demand for cooling, leading to potential outages in some areas.

·      High humidity may trigger skin issues or respiratory discomfort, especially in crowded markets like Gariahat or New Market. Local businesses, such as cold drink stalls, may see a surge, while restaurants could face fewer customers during peak heat hours. In North Bengal, thunderstorms might disrupt farming or travel but will keep temperatures manageable. Weekend rains in South Bengal could cause water logging in low-lying areas, so residents should prepare for minor disruptions.

Kolkata’s April 2025 heatwave is no joke but with the right precautions, you can stay safe and comfortable. Hydrate, avoid the midday sun and keep your home cool to beat the heat. North Bengal residents should watch for lightning and stay indoors during storms. By staying prepared, you can tackle this extreme weather with confidence. Let’s keep safety first and enjoy the season as best we can.!
