Kolkata and several parts of Bengal are witnessing record-breaking unseasonal rain leading to a sharp dip in temperature. The rainfall caused by a low-pressure system and dual cyclonic circulations is expected to continue till the weekend affecting both rural and urban areas. The sudden climate shift has raised concerns about crop damage, particularly in agriculture-dependent regions.


Temperature Drops, Winter Chill Returns

The Alipore Meteorological Department reported 48mm rainfall in Kolkata causing temperatures to drop drastically. The city’s daytime temperature fell from 30.9°C to 27.5°C and night time temperatures recorded a 5°C drop in just 24 hours. Villages and rural areas are experiencing a return of winter-like conditions surprising residents.


Heavy Rain & Storm Warning for Bengal

The weather forecast predicts more rain across South Bengal in the coming days.

- Friday: Thunderstorms with light to moderate rain in East & West Midnapore and North & South 24 Parganas.

- Saturday-Sunday: Increased rainfall with strong winds and lightning in entire South Bengal including Kolkata.

- North Bengal: Continuous rainfall in Malda, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong till Sunday.

The rain is expected to subside after Monday with dry conditions returning and temperature gradually rising.

Farmers are facing major losses as unseasonal rain threatens crops

- Potato farms at high risk due to excess moisture.

- Aman paddy nurseries may suffer water damage.

- Mango blossoms and seasonal vegetables could be affected impacting market supply.

Agriculture experts fear significant financial loss if rainfall continues beyond the forecasted period.

Darjeeling & Kalimpong Brace for Snow & Rain

The hilly regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong may experience rain and snowfall adding to travel concerns. All North Bengal districts will likely receive thunderstorms and light rain throughout the weekend.

- Saturday-Sunday: Moderate to heavy rain, gusty winds.
