November 30, 2025 | Source: The Daily Hints: If you are planning to travel via the South Eastern Railway (SER) this week, check your train status immediately. In a move that will disrupt thousands of daily passengers, railway authorities have announced a massive “Traffic Power Block” starting tomorrow, December 1, 2025.
The disruption, caused by urgent safety-related maintenance work (Engineering, TRD and Signal & Telecom) in the Adra Division will result in the cancellation, diversion and short-termination of several key trains. This comes as a fresh blow to commuters in the Kharagpur and Adra divisions, who have already been battling irregular services for months.
Details & Context: The “Cancelled Train” List
The maintenance work is scheduled to run from December 1 to December 7, 2025. The impact will be most severe on MEMU Passenger trains that serve as the lifeline for office goers and students connecting Purulia, Asansol and Adra.
FULLY CANCELLED TRAINS
Adra-Asansol-Adra MEMU Passenger: Cancelled on December 2 and December 7.
Adra-Barabhum-Adra MEMU Passenger: Cancelled on December 7.
Asansol-Purulia-Asansol MEMU Passenger: Cancelled on December 7.
SHORT-TERMINATED
& DIVERTED ROUTES
Several long-distance and intercity trains will not complete their full
journey. Passengers on the following routes must prepare for “Short-Termination”
(train ending before destination) or “Route Diversion”
i. Jhargram-Dhanbad-Jhargram Express: Route shortened.
ii. Bokaro-Dhanbad-Bokaro Passenger: Will not complete full run.
iii. Bardhaman-Hatia-Bardhaman MEMU: Short-terminated.
iv. Gomoh-Hatia-Gomoh Passenger: Short-terminated.
v. Tatanagar-Asansol-Barabhum MEMU: Route cut short.
vi. Adra-Asansol-Adra Services: Partial disruptions on non-cancelled days.
Note: Several other trains may run on diverted circular routes. Passengers are advised to check the NTES app before leaving home.
Why Is This Happening.?
According to the South Eastern Railway notification, the shutdown is necessary for “Urgent Infrastructure Maintenance.” The Adra Division is undergoing critical upgrades involving
· Engineering Works: Track renewal to prevent derailments.
· TRD (Traction Distribution): Overhead wire maintenance for electric locomotives.
· S&T (Signal & Telecom): Upgrading signaling systems to avoid technical glitches.
While these upgrades are vital for safety, the timing—right at the start of the busy December travel season—has sparked frustration.
Voices from the Ground: “New Month, New Suffering”
The resentment among daily passengers is palpable. The Kharagpur Division has faced heavy criticism recently for irregular local train timings and this new block in the Adra section adds fuel to the fire.
“We come to Kolkata or Asansol for jobs. If the morning MEMU is cancelled, we lose a day’s pay. The railways call it maintenance, we call it harassment,” posted one frustrated user on X (formerly Twitter), tagging the Railway Minister.
Another netizen commented, “Just as the tourist season for Purulia starts, they cancel the main connecting trains. How are families supposed to plan weekend trips.?”
Impact Analysis: Commuters & Tourists Hit Hard
i.
The
Office-Goer Crisis
The Adra-Asansol belt is an industrial corridor. Thousands rely on these
specific MEMU trains to reach steel plants, coal mines and corporate offices.
With the cancellation of the Adra-Asansol MEMU, alternative road transport
(buses) will likely be overcrowded and overpriced.
ii.
The
Tourism Blow (Purulia Season)
December marks the beginning of the peak tourist season in Purulia.
· With school holidays starting in state-run schools (end of session), many Bengali families plan short trips to the Ayodhya Hills or Baranti.
· The Asansol-Purulia MEMU is a popular budget option for these tourists. Its cancellation on December 7 (a Sunday, a key return travel day) will leave many stranded or forced to hire expensive private cabs.
Alternate Travel Options
If your train is on the cancelled list, consider these alternatives immediately:
· Bus Services (SBSTC): The South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) runs frequent buses from Kolkata (Esplanade) to Purulia and Asansol to Purulia. Book online via the SBSTC portal.
· Road Travel: The road connectivity via NH-19 (Durgapur Expressway) remains normal. Private taxis from Asansol station to Purulia take approximately 2 hours.
· Check “Spot Your Train”: Use the NTES or Where Is My Train app to check if your train is diverted or just delayed.
Conclusion
While safety maintenance is unavoidable, the December 1–7 Traffic Block will undoubtedly cause chaos for the next week. Passengers are urged to plan ahead, avoid peak travel dates if possible and keep an eye on official Railway Twitter handles for last-minute updates. Normal services are expected to resume fully after December 8.
