§  Durgapur Case Reveals Dark Truth About Trusted Friends Turning Predators

Trust No One, Be Only One.!!! The haunting words of a devastated father from Durgapur echo across India today: “My daughter trusted them and went with them - this destroyed everything.! Where is trust left.?” His daughter, a 23-year-old second-year MBBS student from Odisha, became another victim in a disturbing pattern sweeping educational institutions - betrayal by those considered closest friends and classmates.

When Your Safest Person Becomes Your Biggest Threat

The Durgapur incident on October 10, 2024 sent shockwaves through West Bengal and beyond. The young medical student stepped out for dinner around 8:30 PM with a male classmate she trusted. What should have been a routine evening turned into a nightmare when she was allegedly attacked near the IQ City Medical College campus.

In a dramatic twist, police arrested her own classmate Wasif Ali from Malda as the sixth accused in the case. After thorough investigation including CCTV analysis and survivor testimony, Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Choudhary revealed, “Investigation and medical reports have so far indicated the involvement of only one person”. The very friend who accompanied her that night became the prime suspect.

The Disturbing Pattern: Not an Isolated Case

·       What makes this even more alarming is the pattern emerging across India’s educational campuses. Just months before Durgapur, similar betrayals shattered lives

o   Garfa, Kolkata (December 21, 2024): An engineering student was allegedly raped by her classmate after he spiked her drink at a friend’s apartment. The accused was someone she knew from school and had recently reconnected with on social media.

o   Anandapur, Kolkata (September 26, 2024): A second-year engineering student was allegedly raped by her classmate after being intoxicated in her own paying guest accommodation. The accused was the boyfriend of her roommate - someone within her close circle.

These aren’t strangers lurking in dark alleys. These are classmates, friends, companions who shared classrooms and cafeterias. People trusted with secrets, vulnerabilities and friendship.

Why Are Friends Becoming Betrayers.? Psychology Experts Explain

Dr. Payel Talukdar, psychiatrist at R.G. Kar Medical College Hospital, points to multiple factors,

“These cases are increasing. We live in a patriarchal society. Even if someone is a classmate, they view women as objects. They see what's happening around them and replicate it. Increased substance abuse means they cannot control impulsive thoughts”.

Betrayal trauma theory, developed by psychologist Dr. Jennifer Freyd, reveals a crucial insight: the closer the relationship to the betrayer, the greater the traumatic impact. When someone you depend on for emotional support violates that trust, it triggers responses similar to severe trauma.

Research shows that 30% to 60% of people who experienced betrayal suffered from PTSD, sadness and anxiety. The psychological wounds run deeper because betrayal doesn’t just break trust - it shatters your sense of self and safety.

The Betrayal Blindness: Why Victims Trust Until It’s Too Late

One of the most heartbreaking aspects is what psychologists call “betrayal blindness”. Victims often remain unaware of potential danger because they need to maintain the relationship. Children depend on parents, students depend on peers for social connection and this dependency creates vulnerability.

Dr. Shivani Misri Sadhoo, a leading relationship expert in India, explains: “Betrayal isn’t just about broken trust – it’s a deep emotional wound that can cut to the core of a person's sense of self, safety and stability. When that betrayal comes from a friend or classmate, someone you see every day and confide in, the trauma multiplies.

The Dark Psychology: What Drives Trusted People to Betray.?

·       Multiple psychological factors contribute to friendship betrayal, according to experts

o   Objectification and Patriarchal Mindset: Despite being classmates, perpetrators view victims as objects rather than equals, especially in cases involving women.

o   Lack of Integrity and Entitlement: Some individuals believe rules dont apply to them or feel entitled to take what they want.

o   Selfishness and Greed: Betrayers put their needs and desires before the wellbeing of those who trust them.

o   Environmental Influences: Exposure to substance abuse, negative peer groups and normalization of violence contributes to inability to control impulses.

o   Attachment Issues: Insecure attachments from childhood can lead to troubled relationships and higher likelihood of betraying others.

Campus Safety Crisis: Institutions Under Fire

The Durgapur case exposed severe gaps in campus security. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned, “How did they come out of the campus at 12:30 AM.? Wasn’t it the responsibility of the college.?” However, reports confirmed the student actually left around 8:00-8:30 PM, not midnight.

The crime scene near the medical college lacked basic safety measures including CCTV cameras and adequate lighting. This systemic failure allowed the incident to occur in a poorly lit, secluded area behind hospital premises.

Following the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case in August 2024, West Bengal introduced the Aparajita Women and Child Bill with death penalty provisions for rape resulting in death or vegetative state. Yet cases continue to emerge, raising questions about enforcement effectiveness.

The Aftermath: Healing from Betrayal Trauma

Betrayal by friends creates lasting psychological scars. Common symptoms include difficulty trusting again, anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, attachment issues and even physical pain.

Mental health experts emphasize that healing requires acknowledging the trauma rather than suppressing it. Key recovery steps include seeking professional therapy, building healthy support networks, and understanding that the betrayal reflects the betrayer's character, not the victim's worth.

Warning Signs: How to Protect Yourself

·       While no one should have to protect themselves from friends, awareness can help identify potential red flags,

o   Friends who talk negatively about you behind your back

o   People who share your private information with others

o   Those who lie frequently or whose words don't match actions

o   Friends who spread rumors or allow others to demean you

o   Individuals who prioritize their needs without considering your wellbeing

o   Companions who pressure you into uncomfortable situations

What Institutions Must Do Now

·       Educational institutions must implement comprehensive safety measures,

o   Enhanced Security Infrastructure: CCTV cameras, adequate lighting, 24/7 security personnel and strict entry-exit monitoring.

o   Mental Health Support: Accessible counseling services, mental health literacy programs and early intervention systems.

o   Safety Education: Teaching students about consent, healthy relationships, recognizing manipulation and reporting mechanisms.

o   Anti-Ragging and Anti-Harassment Policies: Strict enforcement with zero tolerance for violations.

o   Community Building: Creating peer support networks and fostering culture where students look out for each other.

The National Crime Reality

West Bengal registered 34,691 cases of crimes against women in 2023 with a crime rate of 71.3 per lakh female population - above the national average of 66.2. Student suicides increased 65% over the past decade with mental health crisis deepening among youth.

Across India, campus sexual assault cases show alarming trends. A 2024 survey found nearly 10% of students experienced sexual assault within institutions but only 16% filed formal complaints. The gap between occurrence and reporting highlights deep-seated fear, stigma and lack of trust in justice systems.

Moving Forward: Rebuilding Trust Without Losing Hope

The Durgapur father’s anguished question – “Where is trust left.?” - resonates with countless families. Yet experts emphasize that while caution is necessary, completely closing off isn’t the answer.

Dr. Krishna Athal notes, “Betrayal can cause significant emotional distress but it’s up to you how much that pain damages you permanently”. The goal isn't to stop trusting everyone but to develop wisdom in choosing whom to trust and recognizing healthy versus toxic relationship patterns.

Universities must recognize their critical role in student wellbeing beyond academics. Creating safe spaces where students can thrive without fear should be non-negotiable, not an afterthought.

The Path to Justice and Prevention

The swift arrests in the Durgapur case - with all six accused now in custody - demonstrate that justice can move when authorities act decisively. However, justice after trauma isn’t enough. Prevention must become the priority.

West Bengal’s Aparajita Bill awaits presidential assent to become law. Meanwhile, institutions cannot wait for legislation. Every college and university must audit safety protocols, implement trauma-informed support systems and create environments where students can report concerns without fear.

Parents, too, must engage in open conversations with children about healthy friendships, consent, substance abuse dangers and the importance of speaking up when something feels wrong - even about friends.

Conclusion: Trust Must Be Earned, Safety Must Be Guaranteed

The transformation of trusted friends into betrayers represents one of the most painful violations humans can experience. As Dr. Jennifer Freyd’s research confirms, betrayal by those we depend on creates trauma that can last years.

The Durgapur case and similar incidents across India expose urgent need for systemic change in how educational institutions approach student safety, how society addresses toxic masculinity and objectification and how mental health support reaches vulnerable youth.

Trust is fundamental to human connection and growth. But it must be built on foundations of respect, consent and accountability - values that institutions, families and society must actively cultivate rather than merely demand.

The haunting question “Where is trust left.?” deserves an answer

Trust remains where integrity lives, where respect thrives, where safety is prioritized and where betrayal is met with swift justice and systemic change to prevent the next victim.
