A Massive Whale Rescued from the Hooghly Riverbank in South 24 Pargana’s Kakdwip

top-news

A remarkable event unfolded in South 24 Pargana’s Kakdwip as a giant deep sea whale was rescued from the Hooghly Riverbank. Last two days the whale had been spotted in different locations into the river before forest officials intervened and safely relocated the whale back to the Bay of Bengal.

Who, What, When and Where

The Forest officials in South 24 Parganas successfully rescued the massive whale stranded on the Hooghly Riverbank near Kakdwip’s Kamarhati area. The whale usually found into deep waters was first spotted on the riverbank of Ghoramara Island two days ago and later near Kakdwip on last Thursday.

Details and Context

Local peoples initially spotted the whale near Ghoramara Island and tried to push it back into the river. After that the whale was later seen stranded at Kamarhati and Madhusudanpur on the Hooghly Riverbank. Upon receiving the information a large rescue team from the Forest Department led by Assistant Divisional Forest Officer (ADFO) Anurag Choudhury rushed to the spot and successfully relocated the whale to the Bay of Bengal, where it will be released into deeper waters.

Forest Officials’ Investigation

ADFO Anurag Choudhury explained that such whales are not native to the river waters and are generally found into the deep seas. The officials are investigating how the whale entered into the Hooghly River. It is speculated that the creature may have lost its way due to unusual environmental conditions or oceanic disturbances.

Similar Past Incident

Five years ago a similar incident occurred in Mandarmani where the carcass of a giant marine creature believed to be a species of blue whale washed ashore. The Experts suggested that the deep sea whales do not typically inhabit the Bay of Bengal due to its unsuitable water conditions. They remain into the Indian Ocean or other deep waters.

Possible Explanations

The Experts theorise that cyclonic activity or ocean currents might have caused the whale to lose their way. In the earlier Mandarmani case the devastating Cyclone Amphan was believed to have contributed to a whale straying into unfamiliar waters.
