National Highway 10 Collapses, Bengal-Sikkim Lifeline Cut Off | Teesta Landslide Crisis

·       Bengal-Sikkim Lifeline Cut Off

·       Teesta Landslide 2025 shuts down National Highway 10, disrupting Bengal-Sikkim connectivity. Get updates on NH10 collapse, traffic diversions and Sikkim tourism impact

A catastrophic landslide has once again crippled National Highway 10 (NH10), the vital link between West Bengal and Sikkim, following relentless rainfall. The highway, already battered by earlier disruptions, faced another massive collapse near Teesta, plunging the region into chaos. With roads blocked, traffic diverted and connectivity severed, the Bengal-Sikkim lifeline is in dire straits, impacting locals, tourists and businesses alike.

Details & Context
National Highway 10, often called the “lifeline” of Bengal and Sikkim has been repeatedly hit by landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains. On August 2nd, 2025 posts on X reported a severe landslide near Tarkhola, close to Teesta Bazaar, which caused a portion of NH10 to collapse into the Teesta River gorge. This disaster followed days of continuous rainfall which destabilized the hilly terrain, leading to multiple landslides along the highway. The road was closed for eight consecutive days with floodwaters from the swollen Teesta River even flowing over parts of the highway, making it impassable.

The Kalimpong district administration and National Highway Authority acted swiftly, clearing debris and cutting new paths through the hills to restore access. By Friday morning, August 8th, 2025 traffic resumed briefly, offering hope to stranded commuters and businesses. However, this relief was short-lived. Just 24 hours later, on Saturday, August 9th, 2025 another landslide struck at the 29-mile marker, wiping out a significant portion of NH10. As a result, vehicular movement was halted again, leaving the highway in shambles.

To manage the crisis, authorities diverted traffic through an alternate route via Sevoke, Gorubathan, and Algarah to reach Sikkim. However, this detour has led to severe traffic congestion with long queues of vehicles causing delays and frustration. The recurring landslides have raised concerns about the highway’s stability, especially as the monsoon season continues to batter the region. Posts on X highlight the urgency of the situation with reports of entire sections of the road being washed away into the Teesta River.

Quotes

·       “The situation is critical. NH10 is not just a road; it’s the backbone of connectivity for Sikkim and Bengal. These repeated landslides are a wake-up call for better infrastructure and disaster preparedness,” said a local official from Kalimpong, as reported on X.

·       “Tourists and locals are stuck and businesses are suffering. We need a permanent solution, not temporary fixes,” shared a Sikkim-based trader on social media.

Additional Information
The Teesta River, swollen by heavy rainfall has compounded the crisis by flooding sections of NH10, making repairs challenging. The highway’s strategic importance cannot be overstated—it connects Siliguri in West Bengal to Gangtok in Sikkim and serves as a critical trade and tourism route. The repeated closures have disrupted supply chains, delayed essential goods and stranded tourists, prompting widespread concern among local businesses and the tourism sector.

Authorities have advised commuters to avoid NH10 and use alternate routes but these detours are narrow and prone to congestion, exacerbating the situation. The Kalimpong administration has deployed emergency teams to clear debris but the scale of the damage and ongoing rains have slowed progress. Posts on X indicate that the region’s disaster management teams are working round-the-clock but the terrain’s instability poses a significant challenge.

Impact Analysis
The landslides on NH10 have far-reaching consequences,

·       Economic Disruption: The highway closure has halted the transport of goods, impacting businesses in Sikkim and North Bengal. Local markets are facing shortages and prices of essentials have surged.

·       Tourism Hit: Sikkim, a popular tourist destination is seeing cancellations and delays as travelers avoid the region due to unreliable connectivity.

·       Commuter Struggles: Thousands of daily commuters, including students and workers are affected by the traffic diversions and delays on alternate routes.

·       Environmental Concerns: The recurring landslides highlight the environmental toll of unchecked deforestation and construction in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

The crisis has sparked discussions on X about the need for long-term solutions, such as reinforced infrastructure, better drainage systems and stricter environmental regulations to prevent further disasters.

Conclusion
The Teesta landslide crisis has exposed the vulnerability of National Highway 10 and the urgent need for robust disaster management strategies. While temporary measures have been implemented, the recurring collapses underscore the importance of investing in resilient infrastructure to withstand the region’s harsh monsoon conditions. As authorities scramble to restore connectivity, the people of Bengal and Sikkim await a permanent fix to secure their lifeline.
