West Bengal is reeling under an intense heatwave with temperatures soaring and humidity making life unbearable. South Bengal including Kolkata is set to endure sweltering conditions until Thursday while North Bengal anticipates heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The India Meteorological Department (@IMD) predicts monsoon arrival in the Andaman-Nicobar Islands by May 13th and Kerala by May 27th, signalling relief in the coming weeks. Stay updated with this detailed weather forecast to plan your week.!

Details & Context
The @IMD has issued a heatwave alert for multiple districts in South Bengal with temperatures expected to remain high until Thursday, May 15th, 2025. Districts like Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, West Bardhaman, Birbhum and Purulia will experience extreme heat with daytime conditions resembling a “loo” (hot wind). Kolkata too, is grappling with oppressive humidity with temperatures hitting 39.4°C on Sunday, 4°C above normal and night time temperatures at 29.2°C, 2.5°C above average. Humidity levels are soaring between 43% and 100%, adding to the discomfort.

·       On Sunday, Kalaikunda, Dumdum and Diamond Harbour were under heatwave conditions. Today, Monday four districts—Bankura, Jhargram, West Bardhaman and West Midnapore—are expected to face heatwaves. By Tuesday and Wednesday, six districts including Purulia and Birbhum will be affected, with Thursday seeing five districts under heatwave warnings.

·       Meanwhile, relief is in sight for some areas. Eight South Bengal districts including North and South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Purulia, West Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia may see thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall today, accompanied by gusty winds of 40-50 kmph. Scattered hailstorms and lightning are also possible. Tuesday will bring rain to five districts and Wednesday to six offering temporary respite from the heat.

·       In North Bengal, the lower districts like Malda and the two Dinajpurs are facing dry, heatwave-like conditions. Malda was hit by a heatwave on Sunday and may continue to face similar weather today. However, the upper five districts—Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri—are bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Today, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri are under an alert for extremely heavy rain with up to 200 mm of rainfall expected. Cooch Behar may also see heavy rain with storms and winds of 50-60 kmph. Thunderstorms and heavy rain will persist in these districts until Thursday, with possible hailstorms and lightning.

The @IMD has forecasted the southwest monsoon's early arrival, entering the Andaman-Nicobar Islands on May 13th, nine days ahead of schedule and Kerala on May 27th, five days early. This signals a potentially robust monsoon season for India, which could bring much-needed relief to Bengal in the coming weeks.

Quotes

·       “The heat is unbearable especially in the afternoons. We’re hoping for rain to cool things down.!” – Debolina Chatterjee Pathak, a Kolkata resident.

·       “Farmers in North Bengal are preparing for heavy rainfall which could impact crops if not managed properly.” – Anil Sharma, an agricultural expert in Jalpaiguri.

·       “The early monsoon arrival is a positive sign but we need to stay cautious about thunderstorms and lightning.” –@IMD meteorologist.

Additional Information
Recent posts on X highlight the public’s frustration with the heat in Kolkata with users sharing tips like staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours. Social media discussions also emphasise the need for preparedness in North Bengal, where heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods in low-lying areas. According to a recent @GoogleTrends analysis, search terms like “Bengal heatwave,” “Kolkata weather today” and “monsoon 2025 India” are trending, indicating high public interest.

The IMD’s extended forecast suggests no significant temperature drop in South Bengal for the next five days, with heatwave conditions persisting in western districts. North Bengal’s upper districts, however, will see consistent rainfall, potentially disrupting travel and outdoor activities. Residents are advised to monitor local weather alerts and take precautions against lightning and strong winds.

Impact Analysis
The ongoing heatwave in South Bengal is straining public health with rising cases of heat exhaustion reported in urban areas like Kolkata. The high humidity exacerbates discomfort, particularly for outdoor workers and the elderly. In North Bengal, heavy rainfall poses risks of waterlogging, crop damage and disruptions to transportation. The early monsoon arrival could benefit agriculture in the long term but requires careful management to prevent flooding. Businesses, especially in tourism and agriculture, may face short-term challenges due to the extreme weather.

Conclusion
