Early Monsoon 2025 | Brings Relief to Heatwave-Hit India

top-news

·      Heavy rainfall in North Bengal

·      Heatwave conditions in South Bengal

·      Weather update on early monsoon arrival in 2025

Great news for India’s weather-weary residents.! The southwest monsoon is arriving early, set to reach Andaman-Nicobar in just 4-5 days thanks to cyclonic circulations over northern Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal. But before the rains cool things down, South Bengal is sweating through a heatwave with temperatures soaring 2-3°C above normal. North Bengal, meanwhile, braces for heavy rains and storms. Here’s your complete weather update for May 11th, 2025.!

Details & Context

India’s weather is about to get a major shake-up. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts the southwest monsoon’s early arrival, driven by two cyclonic circulations: one over northern Bangladesh and another in the southeast Bay of Bengal and southern Andaman Sea. By May 15th or 16th, 2025 the monsoon will hit Andaman-Nicobar, kicking off India’s rainy season ahead of schedule.

·      South Bengal: Heatwave and Storms

o   South Bengal is grappling with sweltering heat until Wednesday, May 14th. Temperatures may climb 2-3°C higher with districts like Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore, Jhargram, West Bardhaman and Birbhum under heatwave alerts for Sunday and Monday. Daytime temperatures in Kolkata hit 39.1°C on Saturday, 4°C above normal with night time readings at 29.7°C, 3°C higher than usual. Humidity levels between 42-90% make it feel even hotter.

o   Relief is on the way, though.! Sunday brings a chance of thunderstorms and light to moderate rain in eight districts, including North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Purulia and Murshidabad with gusty winds of 30-50 km/h. Monday and Tuesday will see similar stormy weather in six districts including South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore. By Wednesday, Kolkata and all of South Bengal can expect lightning and rain, easing the heatwave’s grip.

·      North Bengal: Heavy Rainfall Alert

o   North Bengal’s lower districts face dry, hot weather with temperatures potentially rising 3°C by Sunday. Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur are under heatwave warnings with Malda’s alert extending to Tuesday. Other districts will feel hot and humid.

o   Heavy rain is forecast for North Bengal, starting Sunday. Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri face heavy rainfall with Monday bringing extremely heavy downpours—up to 200 mm—in these areas. Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Cooch Behar will see heavy rain (70-110 mm) on Monday and Tuesday. Thunderstorms with winds of 30-50 km/h are expected across North Bengal including Malda, through Wednesday.

·      Kolkata: Hot Now, Cooler Soon

o   Kolkata recorded its hottest day of the season on Saturday, with scorching daytime heat and sticky nights. Relief is expected by Tuesday or Wednesday, as thunderstorms and rain arrive, cooling the city.

Quotes

·      IMD Official: “The early monsoon onset in Andaman-Nicobar is due to strong cyclonic circulations. We expect widespread rain in South and North Bengal by mid-week.”

·      Kolkata Resident (@WeatherWatcher on X): “Can’t wait for the rains.! This heat in Kolkata is unbearable. #Monsoon2025”

·      Alipurduar Farmer (@BengalFarmer on X): “Heavy rain alerts are worrying but we need water for our crops. Hope it’s not too destructive.”

Additional Information

The early monsoon is a rare but welcome event, last seen in 2021. X posts from accounts like @IMDIndia and @WeatherIndia highlight public excitement with hashtags like #Monsoon2025 and #IndiaWeather trending. @GoogleTrends shows “early monsoon India 2025” and “Bengal heatwave” spiking, reflecting high search interest.

The heatwave in South Bengal is driven by dry westerly winds, while North Bengal’s rains stem from moisture-laden monsoon currents. The IMD’s alerts aim to protect residents and farmers, especially in flood-prone Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri. Kolkata’s high humidity worsens discomfort but incoming storms will lower temperatures.

Impact Analysis

·      Public Health: Heatwaves in South Bengal increase risks of heatstroke, especially in rural areas. Thunderstorms pose lightning hazards but will ease heat stress.

·      Agriculture: North Bengal’s heavy rains could boost rice planting but risk flooding in low-lying areas. South Bengal’s heat delays sowing but rains will help.

·      Economy: Early monsoon benefits hydropower and water supply but may disrupt transport and construction during heavy rains.

·      Public Sentiment: X posts show mixed feelings—relief for rain but concern over storms. Hashtags like #BengalWeather reflect active engagement.

Conclusion

India’s early monsoon in 2025 is a game-changer, promising relief from scorching heatwaves but bringing challenges like heavy rains and storms. South Bengal battles high temperatures, while North Bengal prepares for downpours. Kolkata residents eagerly await cooler days. As the weather shifts, staying informed is key to navigating this dynamic season. Will the early rains bring prosperity or problems.? Only time will tell.!
