Mamata Banerjee’s Murshidabad Visit | Unity Call and Storm Relief

top-news

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Murshidabad for a two-day tour, focusing on relief for families affected by recent violence and unveiling development projects worth ₹718 crore. In a powerful speech, she urged people to reject divisive politics and stay united, saying, “Don’t divide yourselves; if you must, separate my head from my body.” Her visit, amid heightened tensions, also addressed local governance and worker welfare, making it a key moment for Bengal’s political landscape in 2025.

Details & Context
Mamata Banerjee arrived in Murshidabad on Monday, May 5th, 2025 to address the aftermath of recent violence linked to the Waqf Act clashes. Her first stop was a high-level meeting in Berhampore with top officials including the Chief Secretary, State Police DG and district MPs and MLAs. She criticised the administration for not being proactive enough and urged local leaders to stay connected with the public, saying, “Winning elections isn’t enough; visit your areas and engage with people.”

On Tuesday, May 6th, 2025 she held a public rally in Suti where she handed over symbolic keys to families whose homes and shops were damaged in Dhuliyan. She also announced 167 new projects worth ₹718 crore, aimed at boosting Murshidabad’s infrastructure and economy. Her visit came 23 days after reports of displaced Hindu families, highlighting the urgency of her response.

Mamata also addressed broader issues including the safety of Bengal’s migrant workers. She called for workers to return to the state, alleging mistreatment in other regions: “Workers from Bengal are tortured just for speaking Bengali.” Additionally, she announced ₹10 lakh compensation and a home guard job for the wife of Jhantu Sheikh, a Nadia resident martyred in a recent Kashmir terror attack.

Quotes

·      On Unity: “Don’t listen to BJP or fundamentalist groups and get provoked. Instead of dividing yourselves, separate my head from my body. That will make me happy.”

·      On Governance: “The administration should have been more active. MPs and MLAs, don’t just sit after winning votes—go to your areas, connect with people.”

·      On Worker Welfare: “Bengal’s workers face atrocities for speaking their language. Come back to Bengal; we’ll ensure your safety and jobs.”

Additional Information
Mamata’s visit wasn’t without challenges. Some affected families protested outside the Suti BDO office, claiming they couldn’t meet her despite her invitation to do so. This sparked brief unrest, reflecting local frustrations. Her allegations that the BJP relocated riot-hit families to prevent them from meeting her added a political edge to the visit, aligning with sentiments on X about rising tensions in Murshidabad.

Her focus on unity and development comes at a time when Bengal faces not only social challenges but also severe weather. Recent Kalbaishakhi storms and heatwaves have disrupted life in Murshidabad and Kolkata, prompting her to emphasise safety measures like staying indoors during storms and ensuring access to relief. This ties into her broader message of resilience and community support.
