Bengal Braces for Stormy May: Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain to Hit Multiple Districts

top-news

West Bengal is gearing up for a turbulent week as dark clouds loom over the state in the peak of May. The weather department has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall across multiple districts in South and North Bengal with wind speeds reaching up to 60 kmph. From Kolkata to Darjeeling, residents are warned of Kalbaisakhi storms that could disrupt daily life. Here’s everything you need to know about the impending weather chaos and how to stay safe.

Details & Context
A powerful cyclonic circulation stretching from Rajasthan to Bangladesh, passing through Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal is driving significant weather changes across the state. This system, coupled with an active cyclonic circulation over North Bangladesh is funnelling large amounts of moisture into West Bengal setting the stage for intense thunderstorms and rainfall.

·        Sunday: Seven to eight districts including West Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia, East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia, are likely to experience thunderstorms and heavy rain.

·        Monday and Tuesday: Kolkata and all South Bengal districts are under a thunderstorm watch with light to moderate rainfall and winds of 30-50 kmph. No significant temperature changes are expected over the next seven days with day and night temperatures remaining below normal for May.

North Bengal Forecast

From Saturday to Tuesday all North Bengal districts are on alert for thunderstorms and rainfall. On Saturday and Sunday, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri are at higher risk for heavy rain and gusty winds of 50-60 kmph. Other districts may see winds of 30-50 kmph. By Monday and Tuesday, stormy conditions will persist across all districts, from Darjeeling to Malda, though wind speeds may slightly decrease. Temperatures will remain stable with no major fluctuations expected.

Quotes

·      Regional Meteorological Department Official: “The active cyclonic circulation is bringing substantial moisture into West Bengal, leading to widespread thunderstorms and gusty winds. Residents should stay cautious, especially in districts prone to Kalbaisakhi storms.”

·      Local Resident, South 24 Parganas: “We’re preparing for heavy rain and strong winds. These storms can cause power outages and disrupt travel, so we’re stocking up on essentials.”

Additional Information
The weather patterns are driven by a cyclonic circulation that has been active across eastern India influencing not only West Bengal but also neighbouring states. Posts on X indicate public concern about potential disruptions with users sharing updates about road conditions and safety tips using hashtags like #BengalWeather and #Kalbaisakhi. The term “Kalbaisakhi” refers to the nor’wester storms typical in Bengal during pre-monsoon months, known for their sudden onset and destructive potential.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kalbaisakhi storms are common in May but can cause significant damage, including uprooted trees, power outages and flash flooding in low-lying areas. Historical data shows that South Bengal districts like South 24 Parganas and East Medinipur are particularly vulnerable due to their coastal proximity. In North Bengal, hilly areas like Darjeeling and Kalimpong face risks of landslides during heavy rainfall.

Impact Analysis
The forecasted weather could disrupt daily life across West Bengal, affecting transportation, agriculture and infrastructure. In South Bengal, coastal districts may face flooding, while North Bengal’s hilly regions are at risk for landslides. Farmers, already grappling with unseasonal weather, may face crop damage due to strong winds and heavy rain. In Kolkata, urban flooding and traffic disruptions are likely, especially in areas with poor drainage.

The cooler-than-normal temperatures offer some relief from typical May heat but the stormy conditions pose safety risks. Authorities are advising residents to avoid open fields during lightning and secure loose objects to prevent damage from gusty winds.

West Bengal is bracing for a stormy week as thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain sweep across South and North Bengal. With Kalbaisakhi storms looming, residents must stay vigilant and prepared for potential disruptions. This weather event underscores the unpredictability of pre-monsoon conditions and the need for robust preparedness. Stay informed with the latest updates to navigate this turbulent period safely.
