Treating Neighbours Well - A Sign of a True Believer

top-news

Islam teaches that good character is the essence of true faith. Among the many aspects of good character treating neighbours with kindness holds a special place. Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) repeatedly emphasised the rights of neighbours and the importance of being considerate and helpful.

The Importance of Good Character in Islam

Good character is a fundamental part of Islam. Without it faith remains incomplete. The Prophet (PBUH) said

“The best among you are those who have the best manners.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)

Acts of worship in Islam are closely tied to good character. For example prayer (Salah) helps a person stay away from immoral behaviour. The Quran states,

“Indeed, prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing.” (Surah Al-Ankabut: 45)

A true believer is not just someone who prays and fasts but also someone who treats others with kindness and fairness.

Islamic Teachings on Neighbourly Kindness

1. Being Humble and Kind

   - A Muslim should be humble and respectful towards others regardless of their social status. The Quran advises,

“And lower your wing to the believers who follow you.” (Surah Ash-Shu’ara: 215)

2. Speaking the Truth

   - Honesty is a key trait of a good Muslim. The Quran instructs,

“O you who believe...! Fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.” (Surah At-Tawbah: 119)

   - Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said

“Be truthful for truth leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise.” (Sahih Muslim)

3. Trustworthiness

   - Keeping promises and being trustworthy is essential in Islam. Allah commands

“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due.” (Surah An-Nisa: 58)

   - Due to his honesty Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was known as ‘Al-Amin’ (The Trustworthy).

4. Respecting Parents

   - Kindness towards parents is a major part of good character. Allah says

“And worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him and be good to parents.” (Surah An-Nisa: 36)

5. Maintaining Family Ties

   - Islam strongly discourages breaking family ties. The Quran warns

“Would you then spread corruption on earth and break your ties of kinship..? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed.” (Surah Muhammad: 22-23)

   - Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said

“The one who severs family ties will not enter Paradise.” (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)

6. Fulfilling Promises

   - A true believer always keeps promises. Allah says

“And fulfil [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.” (Surah Al-Isra: 34)

7. Being Kind to Neighbours

   - Islam commands respect and kindness towards neighbours, regardless of their faith. The Quran states

“Be kind to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbour, the distant neighbour and the traveller.” (Surah An-Nisa: 36)

   - Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said

“Angel Jibreel kept advising me about treating neighbours well until I thought that he would make them my heirs.” (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)

8. Practicing Patience and Forgiveness

   - A believer should be patient and forgiving. The Quran teaches

“And whoever is patient and forgives – indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.” (Surah Ash-Shura: 43)

9. Modesty and Self-Control

   - Modesty is a sign of true faith. The Prophet (PBUH) said

“Modesty brings nothing but good.” (Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)

10. Justice and Fairness

   - Being just and fair strengthens society. The Quran says

“Be just, that is nearer to righteousness.” (Surah Al-Ma'idah: 8)

11. Compassion and Mercy

   - Islam encourages compassion and kindness. The Prophet (PBUH) said

“The example of the believers in their love, mercy and kindness is like a body, when one part suffers, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever.” (Sahih Muslim)

12. Maintaining Moral Purity

   - Good character also includes moral purity. The Quran advises

“And let those who do not find the means to marry keep themselves chaste until Allah enriches them.” (Surah An-Nur: 33)

Impact of Good Character in Society

- A society where people practice good character experiences less crime, more harmony and greater trust among people.

- Respecting parents, neighbours and fulfilling promises create a strong, united community.

- Islam teaches that good character leads to success in both this life and the hereafter.

Good character is the foundation of a strong faith. Islam teaches that true believers are those who are kind, honest and just in their dealings with others - especially their neighbours. By following these teachings one not only earns the love of Allah but also contributes to a better society.
