West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has challenged Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari stating that if he can prove his allegations, she will step down as CM. This response comes after Suvendu claimed that Mamata follows the Muslim League ideology and disrespects Hinduism. The heated exchange took place during an Assembly session, intensifying the political conflict in Bengal.
Mamata’s Bold Response
In her speech, Mamata strongly defended herself against the accusations, stating,
“I have fought for Bengal all my life. Now at this age I am hearing that I am connected to terrorists in Kashmir and Bangladesh.! If anyone can prove this I will resign immediately.”
She further stated that she would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking whether such allegations could even be made against a sitting Chief Minister.
The Saraswati Puja Controversy
The conflict escalated after allegations surfaced that the West Bengal government had disrupted Saraswati Puja celebrations in certain institutions. This led to a massive uproar in the Assembly resulting in the suspension of Suvendu Adhikari and three BJP MLAs.
Mamata refuted the claims, saying
“Saraswati Puja was celebrated across Bengal. From homes to schools, colleges to clubs over 3-4 crore pujas took place! Just because of one incident they are tarnishing the entire state.”
She explained that the issue at Yogesh Chandra Law College arose due to construction work debris which led to a request to shift the puja inside the premises. Despite this both Saraswati Pujas took place as per the court's directive.

Suvendu Adhikari’s Counterattack
Suvendu hit back, questioning Mamata’s defence
“Today you are trying to prove that you are a proud Hindu, a Banerjee, a nationalist. But the damage has already been done.”
He also warned of repercussions if protests erupt on the streets
“If people come out in protest can you handle it.? You are the Chief Minister, the Police Minister and the leader of the ruling party.”
Additionally, Suvendu threatened legal action stating that he would take Mamata’s speech to the Union Home Ministry and the Calcutta High Court holding her responsible if anything happens to him.
The political battleground in Bengal continues to heat up with Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari locked in a fierce battle of words. The controversy over religion, governance and security is likely to have a significant impact on Bengal’s political future.
