Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which emerged from an anti-corruption movement faced a major setback in the Delhi Assembly elections. Despite ruling the capital for multiple terms Kejriwal and his party could not secure victory this time. This defeat raises questions not only about AAP’s political future but also its role in the opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A.

AAP’s Rise and BJP’s Initial Support

The AAP was born out of Anna Hazare’s 2011 anti-corruption movement, positioning itself as an alternative to mainstream parties. It officially became a political party in 2012 with Arvind Kejriwal at the forefront. Initially BJP extended indirect support to AAP to weaken Congress. However over time AAP became a dominant force in Delhi politics challenging both Congress and BJP.

AAP’s National Aspirations and Congress Rivalry

In 2014 Kejriwal contested against Narendra Modi in Varanasi but lost by a huge margin. However he managed to surpass Congress and BSP, securing the second position. This strengthened his image as a national leader. AAP’s success in Punjab in 2022 further pushed Congress into a crisis. Gradually AAP expanded to Goa and Gujarat achieving national party status in 2023. With the formation of the I.N.D.I.A alliance in 2024 Kejriwal positioned himself as a key player in opposition politics.

Internal Conflicts in I.N.D.I.A Alliance

The biggest challenge within the I.N.D.I.A alliance was leadership disputes. When Rahul Gandhi's leadership was questioned names like Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal were suggested as alternatives. This created internal friction particularly between Congress and AAP. The conflict intensified during Haryana elections and later in Delhi where both parties failed to reach a seat-sharing agreement, leading to a direct contest.

Did Congress Play Spoiler for AAP.?

Many political analysts believe that Congress deliberately fielded candidates in Delhi to cut into AAP’s vote share, just as AAP had done to Congress in states like Goa, Gujarat and Uttarakhand. This strategy worked resulting in AAP’s shocking defeat. Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi suggested that Delhi voters were disillusioned with AAP, leading to a demand for change. This shift has significantly weakened AAP’s position within the I.N.D.I.A alliance.

Future of AAP and I.N.D.I.A Alliance

With this loss AAP’s influence in opposition politics has taken a major hit. The party now retains power only in Punjab whereas Congress governs Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh along with being part of coalition governments in Jharkhand and Jammu & Kashmir. This could mean Congress regaining its central role in the opposition alliance reducing AAP’s bargaining power.

The Delhi elections have changed the dynamics within the opposition. While AAP previously enjoyed dominance, its defeat has strengthened Congress within the I.N.D.I.A alliance. Whether AAP can recover and maintain its position in national politics remains to be seen. For now the power equation within the opposition has clearly shifted.
