Arvind Kejriwal who once emerged as a symbol of anti-corruption and good governance has faced a major political setback in the Delhi Assembly elections. Despite his past popularity he failed to regain public trust. The election results show BJP leading in 39 seats while AAP struggles with 31. Even Kejriwal himself is trailing in the New Delhi constituency.

The Rise of Kejriwal, A Leader with a Vision

Kejriwal an IIT graduate and former revenue officer gained public confidence through his active participation in the 2011 anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare. This credibility helped him establish the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and secure the Chief Minister’s position in Delhi.

What Went Wrong.? The Decline Begins

Despite his clean image, Kejriwal’s downfall started with corruption allegations. In March 2024, he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in the liquor policy scam. Accusations of accepting huge bribes for liquor licenses tarnished his image. His imprisonment marked him as the first sitting Chief Minister to be jailed.

Public Sentiment Turns Against Kejriwal

Though he claimed political vendetta by the Modi government Kejriwal failed to gain public sympathy. His five-month absence from office and the controversy surrounding his residence, dubbed the “Sheesh Mahal” scandal, further eroded his support. Reports revealed Rs 52 crore was spent on refurbishing his bungalow including Rs 5 crore on curtains Rs 12 lakh on toilet seats, and Rs 4 lakh on a massage chair. BJP and Congress both attacked him over these lavish expenses.

Failure to Address Public Concerns

Delhi voters once loyal to Kejriwal, turned against him due to declining public services. Issues like poor sanitation, water shortages and lack of infrastructural progress fuelled discontent. Even during campaign rallies people directly questioned AAP candidates about unfulfilled promises.

Political Alliances and Electoral Strategy

Despite being part of the I.N.D.I.A. opposition bloc AAP and Congress fought the Delhi elections separately. Instead of backing each other Congress openly criticised Kejriwal’s governance further damaging his prospects. Analysts believe this division contributed to AAP’s defeat.

From being an anti-corruption icon to facing rejection Kejriwal’s political journey reflects how public perception can shift dramatically. His legal troubles, governance controversies and strategic missteps played a crucial role in his downfall. Whether he can stage a comeback remains uncertain but for now Delhi has chosen a different path.
