West Bengal is bracing for a sizzling Boishakh as temperatures are set to climb sharply this week. While scattered showers with thunderstorms may offer brief relief in some areas, a heatwave is likely to grip western districts by the weekend. Kolkata will see partly cloudy skies but little rain, with discomfort rising due to high humidity.

Details & Context

·      Weather Patterns: Starting Sunday, storm risks will decrease across South Bengal. Scattered light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected in select districts like North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur and Jhargram until Monday. By Tuesday, clear skies will dominate, pushing temperatures up by 2-4°C by Wednesday.

·      North Bengal Forecast: All North Bengal districts, from Darjeeling to Malda will see light to moderate rain with thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday. Gusty winds (30-40 km/h) may hit Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar. Temperatures will rise by up to 4°C by Wednesday.

·      Kolkata’s Outlook: Kolkata will experience partly cloudy skies with high humidity, leading to morning fog or haze. Rainfall chances drop significantly from Monday, with temperatures potentially hitting 37-38°C by the weekend, creating near-heatwave conditions.

·      Regional Weather Systems: Cyclonic circulations over Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Assam and North Bangladesh, along with trough lines from Jharkhand to Assam and Punjab to Jharkhand are influencing the current weather. Another trough from central Maharashtra to the Gulf of Mannar adds to the mix.
