West Bengal Braces for Heavy Rain and Storms in Multiple Districts

top-news

West Bengal is gearing up for intense weather as heavy rain and gusty winds are forecast across multiple districts over the next two days. South Bengal including Kolkata, and North Bengal will see showers, thunderstorms and winds up to 50 km/h driven by a cyclonic circulation and a western disturbance.

Details & Context

·      South Bengal Forecast: On Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, rainfall will ease slightly in southern districts, with light to moderate showers and thunderstorms possible in East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura and West Bardhaman. However, Thursday and Friday will bring scattered heavy rain and gusty winds (30-50 km/h) across all South Bengal districts including Kolkata.

·      North Bengal Outlook: North Bengal faces a higher chance of rain and storms on Wednesday and Thursday, with light to moderate showers, thunderstorms and winds of 30-40 km/h in districts like Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Malda. Rainfall will decrease slightly by Friday.

·      Weather Systems: A cyclonic circulation over Madhya Pradesh and Bangladesh, combined with a western disturbance entering northwest India on April 16th is driving the stormy weather. Two trough lines—one from Rajasthan to the Gulf of Mannar and another from Madhya Pradesh to Bangladesh via Jharkhand—are fuelling rain across the region.

·      Kolkata Conditions: Kolkata saw a temperature rise, with highs of 34.2°C and lows of 27.2°C. Wednesday may bring light rain in the evening but heavier showers are expected on Thursday. High humidity (45-88%) will cause discomfort, especially during the day.

Quotes

·      Weather Official (Generalised): “South Bengal will see scattered heavy rain and gusty winds on Thursday and Friday while North Bengal faces stormy conditions through Wednesday and Thursday.”

·      Local Resident in Kolkata: “The humidity is unbearable and with rain coming, we hope it cools down but doesn’t cause flooding.”

·      Meteorologist Insight: “The cyclonic circulation and western disturbance are creating a perfect setup for widespread rain and thunderstorms across West Bengal.”

Additional Information

·      Other States Affected: Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and parts of Northeast India. Hailstorms and winds up to 50 km/h may hit Odisha, Jharkhand and Vidarbha. Heatwave conditions are likely in Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Gujarat.

·      Temperature Trends: West Bengal’s temperatures will remain stable, with slight drops during rain but rises on sunny days. Humidity will add to discomfort, especially in urban areas like Kolkata.

·      Safety Concerns: Thunderstorms and gusty winds raise risks of fallen trees, power outages and flash flooding in low-lying areas. Residents are advised to avoid open fields during lightning and secure outdoor items.

Impact Analysis

·      Social Impact: Heavy rain and storms may disrupt daily life, especially in rural areas of South and North Bengal. Urban centers like Kolkata could face water logging, affecting commuters and businesses.

·      Economic Implications: Agriculture in districts like Purulia and Bankura may benefit from rain but excessive showers could damage crops. Transportation and logistics may face delays due to poor visibility and road conditions.

·      Environmental Effects: The rainfall could provide relief from heat but may strain drainage systems, leading to urban flooding. Strong winds pose a risk to infrastructure, particularly in hilly North Bengal areas.

West Bengal is on high alert as heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds are set to sweep through South and North Bengal. With Kolkata facing humid discomfort and potential water logging, residents must stay prepared for challenging weather. By staying informed and taking precautions, communities can navigate this stormy period safely.
