Beware of Digital Arrest Scams...! Know How to Get Your Money Back.

top-news

A new type of cyber fraud called “Digital Arrest” is on the rise in India. Scammers contact victims via video calls, pretending to be law enforcement officers and falsely accuse them of crimes. Out of fear many people end up transferring large sums of money. If you ever face such a situation here’s what you need to do immediately.

What is a Digital Arrest Scam.?

Cybercriminals target people by calling them via video calls and claiming that there is a serious legal case against them. They show fake documents, police IDs or even create deep-fake videos to make their claims seem real. Under pressure many victims send money to scammers believing it will prevent their “arrest.”

How to Identify This Scam.?

- You receive a sudden video call from an unknown number.

- The caller pretends to be a government or police official.

- They claim you are involved in illegal activities.

- You are asked to transfer money immediately to avoid arrest.

- Threats and fake legal documents are used to intimidate you.

Steps to Take If You Are Targeted

1. Stay Calm – Do not panic or make any hasty decisions.

2. Do Not Transfer Money – No real law enforcement agency will demand money via phone.

3. Report the Incident – Immediately call the National Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930 or file a complaint on the Cyber Crime Portal www.cybercrime.gov.in.

4. Inform Your Local Police Station – Lodge an official complaint for legal action.

5. Secure Your Bank Accounts – If you have already sent money contact your bank to block further transactions.

How to Protect Yourself from Digital Arrest Scams.?

- Avoid answering video calls from unknown numbers.

- Verify claims by directly contacting official law enforcement agencies.

- Never share personal or banking details over a call or message.

- Stay updated on cybercrime trends to recognise such frauds.

- Spread awareness among friends and family to prevent more victims.

The “Digital Arrest” scam is a dangerous new cybercrime that preys on fear. By staying alert and following the right steps you can protect yourself and help law enforcement take action against fraudsters. If you ever encounter such a scam remember that help is just a call away - dial 1930 and report immediately...!
