The comments which went viral in a video shared widely on X, triggered immediate backlash. On May 14th, 2025 the Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo motu cognisance and an FIR was filed against Shah. MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari also lodged a separate FIR, accusing Shah of insulting a soldier and Indian women. Shah issued an apology on May 13th evening, claiming his words were taken out of context and calling Qureshi a “real sister” who brought pride to India but the damage was done.

Colonel Sofia Qureshi comes from a family with a strong military legacy—her grandfather served in the Army and her husband is a Major in the Mechanised Infantry. She joined the Army in 2006, serving as a military observer in the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo. Over six years in peacekeeping operations and as the first Indian woman officer to lead a training team at the 2016 ASEAN Plus ‘Force 18’ exercise, she earned accolades. Then-Lt. Gen. Bipin Rawat had praised her selection, saying it was based on her leadership and capability, not her gender.
