According to the Hindu calendar this sacred night falls on the Chaturdashi Tithi (14th day) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna. In 2025 Maha Shivratri will be observed from Wednesday 26th February starting at 11:10 AM and will end on Thursday 27th February at 8:55 AM as per the Vishuddha Siddhanta Panjika. Devotees mark the occasion with fasting, prayers and offerings to Lord Shiva seeking blessings for prosperity and spiritual growth.
The Spiritual Significance of Maha Shivratri
Maha Shivratri holds a special place in Hinduism symbolising the union of Shiva (masculine energy) and Shakti (natural energy means param brahma) - representing the cosmic balance. This night is believed to bestow spiritual awakening, inner peace and fulfilment of wishes for those who observe the rituals with devotion.
Rituals and Offerings for Maha Shivratri 2025
Worshippers follow specific rituals during Maha Shivratri, starting from the day before,
1. Pre-Fasting Preparation
- Devotees consume a simple vegetarian diet the day before Shivratri to purify their body and mind.
2. Observing the Fast
- The fast begins on the morning of Maha Shivratri and continues till the next day. Some devotees observe a strict waterless fast (Nirjala Vrat) while others consume fruits and milk.
3. Ritual Bath of Shiva Lingam
- The Shiva Lingam is bathed four times during the night with Ganga water, milk, ghee and honey.
4. Offerings to Lord Shiva
- Sacred items like Bel leaves, Datura flowers, Aak flowers, Aparajita flowers (Blue flowers) and fruits or sweets are presented.
5. Chanting Mantras
- Devotees chant “Om Namah Shivaya” throughout the night performing four rounds of puja during each Prahar (phase of the night).
