A dramatic robbery in Kolkata’s Regent Park took an unexpected turn when police discovered that the victim herself had staged the crime. Sonali Biswas the complainant along with her brother in law Raja Nag planned the entire act to hide the theft of family gold. Both have now been arrested.
The Shocking Robbery Claim
On Monday evening Sonali Biswas filed a complaint stating that two masked robbers barged into her house, gagged her with cloth and held a knife to her throat. She claimed they forced her to open the cupboard and stole gold jewellery before escaping. The alleged crime occurred just 200 meters from the Regent Park police station.
Police Investigation Uncovers Lies
Initially the case seemed like a serious home invasion but police soon noticed inconsistencies
- No CCTV Footage: Despite multiple cameras in the area, there was no sign of intruders entering through the door or roof.
- Contradictory Statements: Sonali’s statements had several gaps raising suspicion among investigators.
As police dug deeper they found that Sonali and her brother in law had been secretly stealing family jewellery for months. When the missing gold became noticeable they staged the robbery to cover up their crime.
The Hidden Motive
Sonali admitted during questioning that she had already taken around 150 grams of gold from the family collection. She also had financial disputes with a relative over several lakhs of rupees. The police believe this could be another motive behind the staged crime.

Impact & Analysis
This incident has raised concerns about false crime reports which waste police resources and create unnecessary panic. Authorities emphasise that such false cases will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against those who attempt to deceive law enforcement.
What started as a terrifying robbery case ended up being a self-made trap for Sonali Biswas and her brother in law. Their attempt to manipulate the system for personal gain ultimately led to their downfall.
