Kolkata's East - West Metro has achieved a significant milestone with a successful trial run from “Sealdah to Esplanade” in just “11 minutes”, smoothly passing through the once problematic Bowbazar stretch.
Sealdah to Esplanade: A Smooth Ride
The East - West Metro also known as the “Green Line, marked a new achievement as a Metro rake successfully completed its trial run between “Sealdah” and “Esplanade”. This trial an upgrade from the earlier trolley trials demonstrated seamless connectivity through Bowbazar.
Metro officials confirmed that more trial runs will continue over the next few days. Following these the “Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS)” will conduct inspections. Once the CRS gives the green light full passenger services on this stretch are expected to begin by mid 2025.
A Milestone for Commuters
The “Green Line” is set to connect “Sector V to Howrah Maidan” revolutionising daily commutes for passengers. The operationalisation of the entire route promises to significantly ease travel woes for the city’s commuters reducing travel time and enhancing convenience.
Bowbazar Challenges Now History
The Bowbazar area once known for its setbacks and challenges during the metro construction is no longer a concern. The successful trial run signals a positive turnaround bringing Kolkata closer to a fully operational underwater metro system.

General Manager on Board
Metro Rail’s “General Manager, P. Uday Kumar Reddy” supervised the trial run from the driver’s cabin emphasising the importance of this milestone. Notably this line includes India’s “first and only underwater metro route” further showcasing the project’s technological and engineering marvels.
The East-West Metro is set to transform Kolkata’s transport system with its cutting edge infrastructure and efficient connectivity. With trials in progress and approvals on the horizon the much-awaited full operation of the “Sector V to Howrah Maidan” route will soon be a reality.
