Kolkata Metro Network: Kolkata Metro an emotion for Bengali’s and it is India’s first metro network. Kolkata metro started their journey October 24^th in the year 1984 from Bhawanipore (Now its Netaji Bhawan) to esplanade and they continues to expand with new routes. Now they have a latest plan, aims to extend Kolkata metro services up to Chuchura in Hooghly district, an great offering seamless travel from Kolkata to Chuchura residents. Kolkata Metro has declare such an exciting development.

The Kolkata Metro currently operates on four major lines, which is Blue Line, Orange Line, Green Line, and Purple Line. Now Kolkata is city where is the country’s only under water metro tunnel connecting Esplanade to Howrah Maidan. (Starting from 15^th March 2024)

Chuchura Metro Proposal: The proposal to extend Kolkata metro services to Hooghly’s Chuchura gained momentum after Member of Parliament and TMC leader Rachana Banerjee raised the issue with the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The Railway Minister A.Vaishnaw confirmed that the possibility of this project has been studied and the primary investigations are ongoing. Chuchura has already taking benefits from the Howrah to Bandel local train route, now this project making the metro extension a logical next step. 

Other Metro Plans in Progress: Besides the Chuchura extension project, there is 3 more new metro routes are under consideration: 

1. New Barrackpore to Barasat (7.5 km): This line’s aim to easy travel in North 24 Parganas. 

2. Baranagar to Barrackpore (12.5 km): This project delayed due to underground water pipelines. 

3. Salt Lake Sector V to Teghoria (6.65 km): This metro route will improve the connectivity in the city’s IT hub. 

Challenges Ahead: Land acquisition is the most big issue for new metro projects. The Railway Minister wants collaboration with the West Bengal government to move forward with those projects.
