The accident took place in Akhaura, Brahmanbaria when a group of youngsters climbed onto the roof of the Pahadika Express train traveling from Chattogram to Sylhet. While filming a TikTok video, the train reached a railway bridge and the group got tangled in satellite dish wires. Four of them fell off the train. Local police and residents confirmed the details, highlighting how a fun activity turned into a nightmare in seconds. This isn’t the first time TikTok stunts have led to disaster, raising concerns about the app’s growing risks.

Quotes

Mohiuddin Ahmed, President of the Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers Association

“TikTok has become a death trap for our youth. Despite so many deaths, no parents have filed a case against TikTok in Bangladesh. The platform earns billions from here but pays no revenue to our government.”

A local witness said

“They were laughing and filming one moment and the next, we saw them fall. It was horrifying.”

Additional Information

The Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers Association claims that 10 young people have died this year alone while making TikTok videos. Over the past few years, the Chinese short-video app has been linked to dangerous trends. Last year, a girl was trafficked to India under the pretext of TikTok fame. In June, another was assaulted after being lured by the app. Experts also blame TikTok for fuelling teenage gang culture in neighbourhoods.

Despite its popularity, TikTok isn’t a licensed entity in Bangladesh, meaning it operates without oversight while raking in massive profits.

Impact Analysis

This incident shines a spotlight on the dark side of TikTok. What starts as a quest for likes and views often ends in tragedy, leaving families shattered. The lack of accountability from TikTok’s management only worsens the problem. For Bangladesh’s youth, the app is proving to be more than just entertainment—it’s a growing threat. Hospitals are seeing more injuries and communities are losing their young to preventable accidents.

The death of Kaiyum and the injuries to his friends are a grim reminder of how far some will go for social media fame. TikTok’s unchecked influence is costing lives and without stricter rules or awareness, such tragedies may continue. It’s time to rethink how we use these platforms before more families pay the price.
