The storm season seems far from over. As temperatures rise, the threat of cyclones has returned, with two brewing storms — ‘Ray’ and ‘09F’ - causing concern. The Fiji Meteorological Service has predicted that ‘09F’ currently a low-pressure system, could soon transform into a Category 1 cyclone and later escalate to Category 2.
Storm ‘09F’ - Growing Stronger
According to the Fiji Meteorological Service ‘09F’ is gaining momentum. At present it remains a depression but experts believe it could intensify into a Category 1 cyclone shortly. There’s a high chance that it might further strengthen into a Category 2 storm.
As the storm advances heavy rainfall is expected raising the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas. Winds are forecasted to pick up speed starting Monday night into early Tuesday morning. Authorities have warned that weak structures could collapse under pressure and flying debris may pose serious risks.
Cyclone ‘Ray’ - A Dangerous Force
Meanwhile, Cyclone ‘Ray’ has already reached Category 2 status and shows signs of intensifying into a severe tropical cyclone. With its current path coastal regions may experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and rough sea conditions.
Experts caution that wind speeds might escalate up to 170 km/h if ‘Ray’ evolves into a destructive hurricane. This could trigger widespread damage, flooding rivers and cause storm surges along vulnerable coastlines.

Impact Analysis
- Heavy Rainfall: Both ‘Ray’ and ‘09F’ are expected to bring torrential rain increasing flood risks.
- Strong Winds: Gusts could reach dangerous speeds especially if ‘Ray’ intensifies.
- Sea Conditions: Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to stay alert as the sea is predicted to turn extremely rough.
- Infrastructure Damage: Weak buildings and poorly constructed structures face a high risk of collapsing.
Authorities are closely monitoring the development of both cyclones. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to stay informed, secure their homes and prepare emergency supplies. The coming days will be crucial in determining how powerful ‘Ray’ and ‘09F’ become.
