Thousands Gather in Beirut to Mourn Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Sunday to pay their final respects to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah who was killed in an Israeli airstrike. The 55,000 seat Camille Chamoun Sports City stadium was nearly full long before the ceremony began.

Hassan Nasrallah a key figure in Hezbollah was killed in an Israeli airstrike nearly five months ago. His death marked a major setback for the Iran-backed group which has long been engaged in conflict with Israel. The funeral attended by thousands of supporters holding Hezbollah flags and Nasrallah’s portraits, aimed to showcase strength and unity.
Prominent guests included Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi an Iraqi delegation of Shiite politicians and militia leaders, and representatives from Yemen’s Houthis.
The ceremony also honoured Hashem Safieddine who briefly led Hezbollah after Nasrallah’s death but was killed in another Israeli strike.
Following Nasrallah’s death, he was temporarily buried next to his son Hadi who died in 1997 fighting for Hezbollah. The official funeral was delayed to coincide with the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon under a US-backed ceasefire.
Despite Israel’s withdrawal its forces still hold five hilltop positions in the south. The tension continues as Israel launched airstrikes on southern Lebanon on Sunday, claiming Hezbollah activity in the region.
