UN Criticises Hamas for Displaying Hostages’ Coffins

The United Nations has strongly condemned Hamas for the way it returned the bodies of four hostages to Israel. The UN Human Rights Office stated that the act was “abhorrent and cruel” violating international law.

On Thursday the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) issued a statement criticising Hamas for parading the bodies before handing them over. The UN emphasised that such actions show a lack of respect for human dignity.
The bodies belonged to hostages who had been held by Hamas in Gaza. Israel confirmed their identities and accused Hamas of using hostages as a tool for psychological warfare. The Israeli government has repeatedly called for the immediate release of all remaining captives.

International human rights organisations have urged all parties to respect humanitarian principles including the dignified treatment of the deceased. The UN reiterated that all sides must follow international laws including the Geneva Conventions.
