The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has officially sought assistance from the Indian government in its ongoing investigation into the Adani Group bribery case. Reports suggest that the conglomerate allegedly paid over Rs 2,000 crore in bribes to secure solar energy contracts in multiple Indian states.
Bribery Allegations Against Adani Group
The allegations state that Adani Group used funds raised from US investors to pay bribes to Indian government officials concealing this information from stakeholders. As a result the US court has issued arrest warrants against Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani and other company executives.
US SEC’s Legal Move
During a court hearing in New York SEC officials emphasised that since Adani Group operates in India legal support from the Indian Ministry of Law has been requested. The SEC aims to serve legal notices under the Hague Service Convention an international treaty facilitating the exchange of judicial and extrajudicial documents across countries.
Hague Service Convention & Its Implications
The “Hague Service Convention” allows legal notices related to business activities to be served across international borders. Citing “Article 5(a)” of this treaty the SEC has formally approached Indian authorities to proceed with their investigation against Adani Group.
Violation of US Anti-Corruption Laws
Under the “Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA)” of the United States individuals and corporations linked to American businesses cannot bribe foreign officials for contracts. If proven guilty Adani Group could face substantial fines and legal actions from the US Justice Department.

Impact Analysis
This case has raised serious concerns regarding corporate ethics and political influence in India. The Narendra Modi-led government has frequently been accused of shielding Adani Group from scrutiny. During his recent Washington visit Prime Minister Modi avoided direct responses to Adani-related corruption queries, dismissing them as “personal matters.”
The Adani bribery case has become an international issue putting both the Indian government and corporate governance under the spotlight. With the US tightening its grip all eyes are now on how the Indian authorities respond to SEC’s request for cooperation.
