The United Nations has made an urgent appeal for 6 billion dollar to provide essential aid to millions of people in Sudan who are suffering from the devastating effects of civil war. The funds are needed to assist almost 26 million people in Sudan and nearby regions in 2025 where conflict and famine have caused widespread hardship.

Details and Context

The conflict in Sudan which began in April 2023 has led to a brutal civil war between Sudan's army leader Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo who commands the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This violence has displaced millions with 12 million people forced to leave their homes and about 3.5 million fleeing the country entirely.

The UN’s humanitarian agencies including OCHA and UNHCR have highlighted the dire situation stressing that nearly two-thirds of Sudan’s population urgently needs emergency aid. In addition famine-like conditions are spreading rapidly across the country with reports of severe hunger already in places like Darfur and the Nuba Mountains.

Tom Fletcher the UN's humanitarian chief emphasised the scale of the disaster,

“Sudan is facing a humanitarian crisis of shocking proportions,” he stated, underlining the horrific effects of the conflict. Sexual violence, child deaths and injuries are rampant with famine threatening to become widespread as the lean season approaches in May.

The UN’s appeal is seeking 4.2 billion dollar to provide life-saving aid to nearly 21 million people within Sudan including critical protection services. These efforts are seen as a “lifeline” to millions who are at risk of starvation, violence and other severe conditions.

Impact Beyond Sudan’s Borders

The situation is not confined to Sudan alone. Neighbouring countries like Chad, Egypt, South Sudan and Uganda are also facing an influx of Sudanese refugees with the UN seeking an additional 1.8 billion dollar to support 4.8 million refugees and local host communities in these countries. The UN warns that without immediate funding up to 4.8 million refugees and displaced persons could face severe food insecurity and crucial health systems may collapse.

Fletcher added, “This conflict has consequences far beyond Sudan’s borders, and we cannot let an entire generation of children miss out on education and basic needs.”

Previous Aid Efforts

In 2024 humanitarian groups managed to raise 1.8 billion dollar for Sudan about 66% of the total requested. This helped them provide food, medical aid and protection services to millions of people in Sudan and neighbouring regions. Despite these efforts much more is needed to meet the growing demand for aid.

The situation in Sudan remains urgent, and the UN’s appeal for 6 billion dollar is critical to provide immediate relief to millions affected by the ongoing conflict and famine. As the humanitarian crisis worsens the world’s response will be key to alleviating suffering and helping those in need.
