On Proposal Day, people express their love and commitment by proposing to their partners. The iconic image of a person kneeling and offering a ring has become a universal symbol of love. But when did this tradition start.?

The Origin of Kneeling Proposals

There is no single historical record of when this tradition began. However the first known visual evidence of a kneeling proposal appeared in 1925.

A silent Hollywood film ‘Seven Chances’, featured a scene where comedian Buster Keaton got down on one knee to propose. This moment inspired a romantic trend, especially across Europe where it became widely adopted as a proposal gesture.

The Evolution of “I Love You”

Interestingly even the phrase “I Love You” has deep linguistic roots. It is believed to have originated from the Old English word “lufu” meaning deep affection. The word evolved from Persian (“Luve”) and Old German (“Luba”) which both signified strong emotional connections.

Over time these words merged into the modern day “I Love You” making it one of the most powerful expressions in any language.
