Donald Trump has begun a large-scale deportation drive targeting undocumented immigrants in the US with Indian nationals among the most affected. Military aircraft including the massive C-17 transport planes are being used to send thousands of people back to their home countries.

Context

- A U.S. military plane carrying a large number of undocumented Indian immigrants has already departed for India, and they are expected to arrive within the next 24 hours.

- According to Pew Research Center, approximately 725,000 Indians are living illegally in the US.

- Trump’s administration is prioritising the deportation of 5,000 undocumented immigrants, the majority of whom are Indian nationals.

- India ranks third in the number of illegal immigrants in the US, following Mexico and El Salvador.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar previously stated that every country has immigration laws, and India supports the legal return of its citizens if they are staying abroad unlawfully.

Trump had promised strict immigration measures even before the US elections and after returning to power, he has intensified efforts to deport those living without proper documentation.

With Trump’s tough stance on illegal immigration, deportations have begun on a large scale. Many undocumented Indians are now being sent back and more deportation flights are expected in the coming days.
