A horrifying plane crash in South Sudan has left 20 people dead including an Indian national. The aircraft carrying oil company engineers and officials, crashed just five minutes after take-off while heading to Juba. Only one person survived the accident.

Context

The plane, which was en route to the South Sudanese capital Juba, suffered a catastrophic failure shortly after take off. According to local media the aircraft was transporting employees of an oil company when it went down. South Sudanese authorities have yet to disclose the exact cause of the crash.

This is not the first aviation disaster in the war torn country. In 2018 a passenger plane crashed while flying from Juba to Yirol killing at least 19 people. Similarly in 2015 a Russian made cargo plane crashed after taking off from Juba Airport, resulting in dozens of fatalities.

Unity State’s Information Minister Gatwech Bipal confirmed that the crash occurred at an oil field airstrip on Wednesday morning. The deceased passengers were employees of Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC), a joint venture between China’s National Petroleum Corporation and South Sudan’s state-owned Nile Petroleum Corporation.
