In a shocking discovery mass graves containing burnt human remains were found in Syria. The remains identified in the outskirts of Damascus, point to the horrifying events of the past.

The Discovery

Rescue workers from Syria’s White Helmets uncovered the bodies in two basements in the town of Sbeneh. The victims included men, women and children with signs of gunshot wounds and burning. Each body was carefully recorded and transported for forensic analysis.

Identifying the Victims

Since late November over 780 bodies have been found in different areas. Many of these were buried in shallow graves, some uncovered by local residents. Experts are working to identify the victims and provide answers to grieving families.

Residents recall the unbearable smell of decomposition when they returned to their homes after years of war. Many were too afraid to report the mass graves fearing retaliation. One witness stated that government forces used to trap people in basements and burn them.

A recent UN investigation detailed extreme human rights violations including torture, executions and inhumane conditions in detention centers. Many detainees died due to starvation, injuries and disease, while others were executed.
