A shooting at Antioch High School in Nashville on Wednesday morning claimed the life of a 16 year old student and left another wounded. The gunman a 17 year old student took his own life after the attack, officials reported.

What Happened

The incident unfolded in the school cafeteria around 11 AM. The shooter identified as Solomon Henderson, opened fire using a handgun killing 16 year old Josselin Corea Escalante. Another 17 year old student suffered a minor injury and was treated at a hospital before being released.

Police Chief John Drake confirmed that Henderson was an active student at the school and had arrived earlier that day on a school bus. “He fired multiple rounds in the cafeteria before turning the weapon on himself,” Drake said in a press briefing.

No Clear Motive Yet

Authorities are still investigating the shooter’s motive. “There may be some materials online we’re looking into,” Drake added. At this stage it appears the victims were not specifically targeted but were hit by random gunfire.

Witness Accounts

One student described the chaos recalling how people ran for safety while others tried to help those who were injured. “I saw people bleeding, lying on the ground. We crouched down and ran out the side door,” the student told a local news station.

School Safety Under Scrutiny

Antioch High School has safety measures, including school resource officers but lacks stationary metal detectors. Adrienne Battle the director of Metro Nashville Public Schools, addressed the concerns “We’re committed to exploring new technologies and strategies to strengthen school safety.”

Two school resource officers were present in the building but were in another area when the shooting began. They rushed to the cafeteria but arrived after the gunman had ended his life.

Parental Grief

Parents were shaken by the tragedy. One parent expressed heartbreak “I tell my kids every day, ‘I love you.’ I can’t imagine the pain of parents trying to call their child, only to get no response.”
