Houthi rebels in Yemen have issued a warning of “Serious Consequences” if any attacks are launched on Yemen during the Gaza ceasefire. They also claimed responsibility for targeting an American aircraft carrier on Sunday.
Context
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is set to begin at 6:30 AM GMT on Sunday. During this period the Houthis stated they would retaliate strongly if their country faced aggression.
In a statement the Houthis said
“We warn enemy forces in the Red Sea about attacking Yemen during the Gaza ceasefire. Any aggression will be met with specific military actions without limits.”
The Houthis claimed they attacked the USS Harry S.Truman and other warships with drones and cruise missiles. They also said the United States aircraft carrier was forced to move away from the area.
The group which aligns with Iran’s “axis of resistance,” has carried out several missile and drone strikes since the Gaza war began in October 2023. They have declared their support for the Palestinians and continued targeting ships in the Red Sea causing disruptions to global trade routes.
