Details
Negotiations to establish a ceasefire in Gaza gained momentum after over eight hours of talks in Doha. Representatives from the US, Egypt, Qatar, Israel and Hamas expressed optimism that a truce could soon be achieved.
However the process is not yet complete. A senior Hamas official revealed that the group is awaiting maps from Israel detailing troop withdrawal plans before finalising their response. Meanwhile Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson confirmed that both sides had been presented with a draft agreement and were working on final details.
Key Developments
- US and Egyptian Involvement: President Joe Biden and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi discussed progress and emphasised the urgency of implementing a deal.
- Hostage Exchange Plans: The proposed agreement includes the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody.
- Phased Ceasefire: If successful the truce would halt ongoing violence, ease tensions across the Middle East and pave the way for humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Challenges and Hopes
Israeli and Hamas officials acknowledged that while progress has been made some critical details remain unresolved. An Israeli official described the discussions as being in a “critical phase,” while Hamas expressed hope that this round of talks would lead to a final deal.
In parallel international efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza are being prepared. The United Nations has expressed readiness to expand relief efforts, though border access and security challenges persist.
Impact and Next Steps
The ceasefire, if agreed upon could end months of devastating conflict that has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza. It is also expected to help stabilise the region, which has seen rising tensions in neighbouring areas like the West Bank and Lebanon.
Both sides remain committed in principle to a truce but disagreements over the conditions for ending the war continue to pose challenges.
