Bird Flu Outbreak Prompts Protected Zone in Scotland.

A bird flu outbreak has been reported in Angus, Scotland leading to restrictions to control the spread. The highly contagious H5N1 Virus strain was identified at over Ascreavie House in Kingoldrum. The Scottish government has set up a protection and surveillance zone to ensure safety.


Details of the Outbreak

- The H5N1 strain of bird flu known for its high infectivity, was confirmed.

- A 3km (1.8 miles) protection zone and a 10km (6.2 miles) surveillance zone have been enforced around the affected area.

- According to the Chief Veterinary Officer Sheila Voas officially announced the measures on Friday evening.


Restrictions in Place

To curb the virus spread, strict rules have been implemented: 

1. Movement Ban: Poultry, eggs, carcasses, litter and manure cannot be moved from the zones.

2. Visitor Records: Farms within the protection zone must track all visitors and their interactions with poultry.

3. Bird Records: Farmers must maintain records of the number of birds, illnesses and deaths on site.

4. Housing Birds: All poultry must be kept indoors or in isolated areas until further notice. 

5. Animal Movement: Domestic animals cannot enter or leave areas where poultry is kept. 

6. Transportation Rules: Poultry or eggs can pass through the zones via main roads or railways without stopping.

What is Bird Flu.?

Bird flu caused by the avian influenza virus, primarily affects birds but can sometimes infect mammals like foxes and seals.

- The ‘H5N1 strain’ first appeared in China in the 1990s.

- It poses a low risk to humans and rarely spreads between people.

- There has been no sustained human to human transmission.


Government's Statement

A declaration on the Scottish government website confirmed that the virus exists or has existed on the premises within the last 56 days. The protection measures will remain in effect until further notice.
