Today's early morning suddenly happen an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale shook five countries claim nine peoples dead in Tibet. The tremors originated near Nepal and were felt across India, including Delhi, Bihar and West Bengal. The quake caused widespread panic as furniture and beds shook leaving people in shock.

Tremors Across Multiple Regions

The earthquake's epicentre was 90 kilometres northeast of Lobuche, Nepal with a magnitude of 7.1. The tremors extended feels in India, Tibet, Nepal, Bangladesh, China and Bhutan. Kolkata, Siliguri and other parts of North Bengal also experienced noticeable shaking lasting for about a minute.

Rising Death Toll in Tibet

So far nine deaths have been reported in Tibet. The affected regions in China also recorded significant tremors. Aftershocks followed with the first one hitting at 7:02 AM registering a magnitude of 4.7. Three more aftershocks were recorded shortly afterward adding to the unease.

Historical Context

This earthquake evokes memories of the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake which claimed more than 2,400 lives and caused massive destruction. Kathmandu and Pokhara suffered severe damage including the collapse of historical landmarks and infrastructure.

Today’s earthquake falls into the “severe” category making it a concerning event.

The Himalayan region being seismically active frequently experiences by earthquakes. Experts suggest that Kolkata about 500 kilometres from the Himalayan foothills remains vulnerable to tremors from such seismic events.
