In a heart breaking incident happened in Ethiopia, a passenger laden truck plunged into a river, leaving at least 70 peoples dead and 7 others critical injured. The accident occurred on the Gelana Bridge between Bona Zuria and Woreda on last Sunday, it is marking a tragic end to the year for the East African nation.
Details of the Incident
The truck carrying an overloaded group of passengers and suddenly lost control on a winding road and veered off the bridge into the river below. According to Eyewitnesses and the police sources report that some passengers were returning from a wedding celebration when this incident happened.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and pulling injured survivors from the wreckage and transporting them to Bona General Hospital for treatment. Authorities have begun efforts to retrieve the partially submerged truck and are investigating the actual cause of the crash.
Osenyele Simeon spokesperson for the Sidama Regional Government confirmed that the accident claimed 71 people’s lives including 68 men and 3 women. He attributed everyone that the tragedy to the truck missing a curve on the winding road resulting in the fatal plunge. The Traffic Police Officers believe the truck was overloaded and contributing to its loss of control.
