The school principal, Aminul Haq confirmed the girls left home together, unaware of the impending danger. Lightning strikes are a recurring threat in Bangladesh, with hundreds of deaths reported annually during the monsoon season (April to October). According to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Disaster Management, over 200 people died from lightning in 2024, underscoring the need for better safety measures.

Local authorities provided initial financial aid to the victims’ families for funeral expenses, expressing condolences for the devastating loss. The incident has sparked grief across Kishoreganj, with residents calling for improved weather alerts and school safety protocols during storms.

The tragedy coincides with severe weather across South Asia, including Kalbaishakhi storms in nearby West Bengal, as noted in recent IMD alerts.

Bangladesh has taken steps to combat lightning deaths, such as declaring it a natural disaster in 2016 and promoting tree-planting to reduce strikes. However, rural areas like Pakundia lack lightning rods and early warning systems, leaving communities vulnerable. X discussions also highlight the emotional toll on Charteki’s residents, with parents now fearing for their children’s safety during monsoons.

The girls’ deaths have drawn parallels to other lightning tragedies, like a 2024 incident in Sylhet where four students died. Activists on X are urging schools to suspend classes during severe weather and teach students safety protocols, such as avoiding open fields and not holding metal objects during storms.
