A recent video featuring popular YouTuber ‘Samay Raina’ has ignited a firestorm of criticism on social media. In the clip he can be seen making an insensitive joke about a two month old baby needing a Rs 16 crore injection for survival. His remarks which included crude humour about the child’s parents have left many outraged while some continue to defend his content.

During a segment on his show ‘India’s Got Lattent’, Samay Raina mimicked how a struggling mother would react if she suddenly received Rs 16 crore for her child’s treatment. With exaggerated facial expressions he joked that she would flaunt her stomach and say, “Inflation is rising.” He then laughed in a distorted voice, while some members of the audience also joined in.

Taking the joke further, he quipped that even if the child survived, “What if he grows up and decides to become a poet.? That would be such a waste of Rs 16 crore.!” This remark followed by mocking the mother’s hypothetical reaction has been heavily criticised as ‘insensitive and distasteful.’

Social media erupted with backlash against Raina’s remarks. Many users called the joke ‘heartless and offensive’ while others argued that the audience also plays a role in encouraging such humour.
