Guwahati: In an unprecedented show of love and respect, Assam is preparing to celebrate what would have been legendary singer Zubeen Garg’s 53rd birthday on November 18, 2025 with a massive statewide blood donation campaign and emotional tributes. The cultural icon, who passed away mysteriously in Singapore on September 19, 2025, continues to unite hearts across Assam even two months after his tragic death.
BJP’s Historic Blood Donation Initiative
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Assam unit announced a groundbreaking blood donation drive to commemorate Zubeen Garg’s 53rd birth anniversary. Speaking at a press conference on November 11, BJP Assam President Dilip Saikia revealed ambitious plans to organize 53 blood donation camps across all districts of the state.
“On the occasion of Zubeen Garg’s 53rd birthday, we have decided to take statewide initiatives to honor him. A total of 53 blood donation camps will be held across all districts and over 5,300 units of blood are expected to be collected,” Saikia announced.
The BJP youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) will lead the organization of these camps, while the party plans to plant nahor saplings at each donation site as a symbolic tribute to the beloved singer. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already directed the National Health Mission (NHM) to provide full assistance to ensure the success of this mega drive.
“As a political organisation, we believe it is our duty to initiate efforts that save lives,” Saikia emphasized, adding that the BJP also plans to install statues of Garg in all constituencies represented by party MLAs.
Record-Breaking Box Office Success
While Assam mourns the loss of its cultural icon, Zubeen Garg’s posthumous film “Roi Roi Binale” has created history in Assamese cinema. The musical romantic drama has become the highest-grossing Assamese film of all time, earning an impressive Rs 19.17 crore gross (Rs 16.25 crore net) in just 11 days since its October 31 release.
According to box office tracking platform Sacnilk, the film garnered Rs 78 lakhs on day 11, maintaining excellent hold despite a 26.41% drop from the second Friday. Made on a budget of just Rs 5 crores, “Roi Roi Binale” has already generated a whopping 225% return on investment, earning the super-hit verdict.
The film has surpassed the previous record holder “Bidurbhai,” which earned Rs 15.75 crore gross during its 2024 theatrical run. Industry experts predict the musical drama could touch the Rs 20 crore net mark by the end of its second week, an extraordinary achievement for regional cinema.
Directed by Rajesh Bhuyan and produced under Zeal Creations and i-Creation, “Roi Roi Binale” features Zubeen Garg playing a blind musician. The ensemble cast includes Mousumi Alifa, Victor Banerjee, Joy Kashyap, Achurjya Borpatra and Yashashree Bhuyan.
The film has earned 174% higher collection than Zubeen Garg’s previous highest-grossing film “Kanchanjangha,” which made Rs 7 crore gross in 2019. Theatres across Assam have reportedly dedicated screens entirely to “Roi Roi Binale,” pausing other films to meet the overwhelming public demand.
Musical Tribute and Cultural Events
Over 200 singers from across Assam will unite for a grand musical tribute titled “Zubeen-Jonak Kontholoi Xuror Orghya” on November 19 at the Assam Engineering Institute playground in Chandmari, Guwahati. The event, scheduled from 5 pm to 10 pm will feature renditions of Garg’s devotional, modern, folk and ethnic songs.
“This event will have no VIP culture; it’s a tribute born out of love and respect,” said singer Barnali Kalita, one of the convening committee members. The program will be open to all with no entry passes or tickets required, with nearly 400 vocalists extending their support for the initiative.
Rehearsals are being held daily at Jyoti Chitraban, with eight music directors overseeing arrangements and around 70-80 instrumentalists participating. The organizers have invited Assamese singers living outside the state to join this shared tribute to the beloved icon.
Justice Movement Continues
The demand for justice in Zubeen Garg’s death case remains strong. BJP President Dilip Saikia confirmed that the party is considering a second phase of its ongoing “Justice for Zubeen Garg” rally, demanding a fast-track court trial.
“We are hopeful that justice will be delivered soon and no one involved in the circumstances leading to his death shall escape accountability,” Saikia stated.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Special Director-General Munna Prasad Gupta has so far recorded statements from over 140 witnesses and arrested seven individuals in connection with the case. Those arrested include festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, bandmates Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta, Assam Police DSP and Garg’s cousin Sandipan Garg and personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared the case a “murder” investigation and set a target to file the chargesheet by December 8, ahead of the December 17 deadline. The Chief Minister met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to seek expedited MHA approval for filing the chargesheet, as incidents occurring abroad require special clearance.
The Assam government has received Garg’s post-mortem and toxicology reports from Singapore authorities, along with MLAT (Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty) guidelines. While Singapore police stated preliminary investigations found no foul play, they acknowledged the matter remains under investigation with a final report expected after 90 days.

A Legacy That Transcends Death
Born on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, Zubeen Garg recorded over 38,000 songs in nearly 40 Indian languages during his 33-year career. He was not just a singer but also a composer, musician, actor, director, filmmaker, poet and philanthropist who adopted 15 underprivileged children.

Garg’s death on September 19 brought Assam to a standstill with lakhs of people taking to the streets for a final glimpse of their beloved icon. His funeral at Sarusajai Stadium drew unprecedented crowds with the government announcing three-day state mourning and according him full state honours with a 21-gun salute.
