§ Record-breaking film Roi Roi Binale released October 31. Zubeen Garg’s final movie breaks every Assamese cinema record amid packed theaters and sold-out shows.
Roi Roi Binale: Assam witnessed an unprecedented moment in Indian cinema history as Roi Roi Binale, the final film of legendary singer-composer Zubeen Garg, opened to packed theaters across the state on October 31, 2025. The movie, which marks the cultural icon’s last appearance on screen following his tragic death in Singapore on September 19, has triggered an emotional wave that’s breaking every box office record in Assamese cinema.
The first show began at an extraordinary 4.25 am at Matrix Cinema in Guwahati, where fans lined up hours before dawn, carrying candles, flowers and traditional gamochas to pay tribute to their beloved star. Before the screening started, audiences sang Zubeen’s iconic song “Mayabini Raatir Bukut” in unison, their voices filled with both love and grief. A special seat draped with a gamocha was reserved inside theaters across Assam as a heartfelt tribute to the artist who redefined regional music and cinema.
Record-Breaking Response Creates Cinema History
The response to Roi Roi Binale has been nothing short of phenomenal. According to Sourav Dutta, general manager of UFO Moviez, this kind of reception is unprecedented in Assamese film history. “You won’t get a ticket for a week. This is not just a movie, it’s an emotional outburst for Zubeen Garg,” he stated.
The film released across 91 screens in the Northeast, including 85 in Assam alone with over 585 daily shows scheduled for the next seven days. Nationwide, it’s screening on 92 screens with over 150 daily shows. For the first time in history, an Assamese film is being shown in cities like Lucknow, Pune, Dehradun, Jamshedpur, Patna, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Jaipur, Goa and Indore.
When advance booking opened on October 25, tickets vanished within hours. The film registered an advance booking sale of ₹41.20 lakh gross on day one with around 13,500 tickets sold across 102 shows. All first-week tickets were sold out in just two days, marking a historic first for regional cinema in India.
Industry sources estimate the film could earn between ₹30-50 crore if it runs for two months, easily surpassing previous Assamese blockbusters like Bidurbhai (₹15.75 crore), Bhaimon Da (₹14.31 crore) and Sri Raghupati (₹13.81 crore).
Theaters Reopen After Years for Zubeen’s Final Film
In a testament to Zubeen Garg’s enduring legacy, two cinema halls that had been shut for years reopened specifically for Roi Roi Binale. The Ganesh Theatre in Jagiroad, Morigaon district which had been closed for seven years, reopened its doors. Viral videos showed old red plastic chairs being cleaned as staff prepared the venue for this historic screening. A prophetic clip of Zubeen saying he would reopen Ganesh Talkies has also emerged, adding to the emotional resonance.
Similarly, the Gandhi Bhawan Cinema Hall in Tihu town, Nalbari district, established in 1944 and fallen into disrepair, also reopened with Roi Roi Binale on Friday. Around 80 cinemas across Assam cancelled all other screenings for a week to exclusively show this film, a gesture never before seen in the state where even well-performing films struggle for screen space.
Emotional Scenes as Fans Bid Farewell
Viewers leaving theaters across Assam were visibly emotional. Many broke into quiet applause as Zubeen appeared on screen, while others wept silently through the end credits. “Even though he’s gone, it felt like he was alive again today,” said one tearful viewer.
In the film, Zubeen plays a blind musician who dreams of touching the sea, a haunting parallel to his real-life death by drowning in Singapore. The movie features 11 songs composed by Zubeen himself. “It felt like Zubeenda’s life on screen. Every frame reflected his journey. It’s hard to accept he is no more,” shared a heartbroken fan from Tezpur.
One particularly poignant moment saw a man carrying his 90-year-old grandmother, who couldn’t walk to the theater so she could watch Zubeen’s final film. From toddlers to the elderly, people of all ages queued up to witness this historic release.
Government Support and Cultural Impact
Recognizing the cultural significance, the Assam government announced it would donate the state’s share of GST collected from Roi Roi Binale to the Kalaguru Artiste Foundation, established by Zubeen Garg to help needy students, artists and flood-affected people. Since Assam doesn’t impose entertainment tax, the film is automatically tax-free.
Zubeen’s wife and co-producer, Garima Saikia Garg, despite her personal tragedy, ensured the film released on October 31 as Zubeen had wished. “This was Zubeen’s dream project, which turned out to be his last too; we are taking it to the people as he expected,” she said. Garima admitted she still hasn’t gathered the courage to watch the complete film.
Director Rajesh Bhuyan told @NDTV, “It is not Zubeen’s film, it’s people’s film. His fans have braved rain to turn up as early as 4 am. This is incredible. You don’t see this often in Indian cinema. This is the magic of Zubeen Garg”.
Zubeen Garg’s Unmatched Legacy in Assamese Culture
Zubeen Garg wasn’t just a singer or actor—he was a cultural phenomenon who shaped Assamese identity for over three decades. With his debut album Anamika in 1992 and the superhit Maya, he emerged as a balladeer who gave hope to people in a state that had witnessed decades of insurgency. He transformed into a rockstar and his people built a cult around him known as “Zubeenism”.
At the peak of his Bollywood career after hits like “Ya Ali,” Zubeen returned to Assam and invested crores of his own money into Assamese films. He produced and acted in 27 Assamese films, delivering hits like Mission China and Kanchanjangha, single-handedly reviving the state’s cinema industry and bringing audiences back to theaters.
His funeral drew lakhs of people who followed him from the airport to his Kahilipara home and then to Sonapur for cremation. The state spontaneously shut down for three days, and his resting place has been turned into a makeshift shrine by fans. The song “Mayabini Raatir Bukut” became an anthem of collective grief.
Promise Kept: A Film Released Against All Odds
Roi Roi Binale represents more than just a movie release—it’s a promise kept. The title loosely translates to “crying inconsolably with pauses,” reflecting the profound grief felt across Assam. Zubeen had been nurturing this story for 19 years and worked actively on it for the last three years. In his final interview with author Rita Chowdhury, conducted days before his death, he spoke passionately about putting his heart and soul into the project.
The film was originally a song released in 1998 with a touch of Carnatic music, which Zubeen called “one of the darkest songs he had ever written”. In the movie, the sea—which tragically claimed his life—is a recurring motif. “You should watch my next film Roi Roi Binale. It starts with the sea and ends with the sea. He wants to touch the sea. He keeps asking how big is the sea. He touches the sea at the end,” Zubeen said in his last interview.
Social Media Campaign and Justice Movement
The release of Roi Roi Binale comes amid a massive online campaign demanding justice for Zubeen Garg’s mysterious death. The hashtag #JusticeForZubeenGarg has crossed 2.5 million posts on social media platforms, making it one of the largest justice-related campaigns in India. Zubeen’s wife Garima and sister Palmee Borthakur have actively joined the movement, posting tributes and urging for a transparent investigation.
A petition calling for a strict investigation into the circumstances of his death has gathered over 3.80 lakh signatures. The movement has united artists, musicians, journalists and citizens across Assam and beyond with synchronized social media posts at designated times creating waves of support.
Nationwide Release and Pan-India Appeal
Roi Roi Binale released across 46 cities in India, marking an unprecedented reach for Assamese cinema. In Guwahati alone, a record 162 shows screened on opening day. Major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad are screening the film across multiple theaters with all opening weekend shows sold out in cities with significant Assamese populations.
In Bangalore, all 10 theaters screening the film reported full bookings. In Dibrugarh, all 12 shows at Galleria Cinema from 7 am to 11 pm were declared sold out within hours with shows remaining houseful until November 2. Some theaters scheduled up to seven screenings daily with the earliest starting at 4.25 am and the last beginning close to midnight.
The film’s technical excellence also stands out—it’s the first Assamese film to feature Dolby Atmos sound, representing both a farewell and a leap forward for regional cinema.

Breaking All Previous Records
The 146-minute musical drama produced by Eye Creations and Zeal Creations has already created history before achieving full collections. On BookMyShow, it recorded interests of 72,200, indicating massive audience anticipation. Trade experts predict Roi Roi Binale will break the record within its first week or by the second weekend.
Previous record holder Bidurbhai collected ₹15.75 crore (worldwide gross) but Roi Roi Binale is expected to shatter that benchmark. Sourav Dutta, who has been associated with the industry for 17 years, stated he had never seen such reception for any English, Hindi or Assamese film in Assam.
The pre-release business of ₹50 lakh is unheard of for any movie from the Northeast. Fans are mounting a campaign inspired by Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir (which continuously screened DDLJ for over three decades) to establish permanent screenings of Roi Roi Binale in Assam, aiming to etch Zubeen’s name permanently in Indian cinema annals.
A Sea of Love: Final Tribute to an Icon
As thousands flock to cinema halls not just in Assam but across 40 theaters in different states, Roi Roi Binale offers catharsis for millions grieving the sudden departure of their real-life hero. The film represents Zubeen’s final embrace with his audience—a promise to heal through his art even in death.
Fans have been promoting the movie by putting up posters across various locations themselves and urging viewers not to record clips on mobile cameras, respecting the sanctity of this final offering. The ensemble cast features Zubeen Garg, Mousumi Alifa, Joy Kashyap and Achurjya Borpatra in this musical romantic drama.
Roi Roi Binale isn’t just breaking box office records—it’s creating a cultural moment that transcends cinema. It’s about love returned, promises kept and a legend who continues to bring people together even after his final curtain call. As one fan whispered while leaving the theater, “Aami sadai enedorei binai thakim” (We will cry like this forever).
In doing in death what he did in life—bringing people together and boosting Assamese cinema—Zubeen Garg has proved once again that true artistry never dies. Roi Roi Binale stands as a testament to the blind love between an artist and his people, a sea of emotion that will continue to flow for generations.
