The mysterious death of Assam’s beloved music icon Zubeen Garg continues to shake the entire nation. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently traveled to Assam to pay his respects to the late singer, visiting the memorial site in Sonapur where Garg’s last rites were performed. Gandhi met with Garg’s grieving family and called for a swift and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s untimely demise in Singapore.
Details & Context
Zubeen Garg, 52, passed away on September 19, 2025 in Singapore under circumstances that remain unclear. The singer had traveled to the city-state to perform as a cultural ambassador at the North East India Festival. On the day of his death, he was on a yacht outing with members of the Assam Association Singapore when he reportedly lost consciousness while swimming.
Initially, reports suggested Garg died during a scuba diving accident. However, subsequent investigations revealed he was swimming without a life jacket when the tragedy occurred. The official death certificate issued by Singapore authorities states the cause as drowning.
Rahul Gandhi’s Tribute to the Fallen Icon
On October 16, 2025, Rahul Gandhi visited Sonapur, located on the outskirts of Guwahati, where a memorial has been built at Garg’s cremation site. Following Assamese tradition, Gandhi offered a gamosa (traditional Assamese scarf) and placed a wreath to honor the legendary artist.
“When I was 17 years old, I went for a mountaineering course in Sikkim. Every day, I would see Mount Kanchenjunga. What I liked about the mountain was that it was honest, transparent, unshakable and beautiful,” Gandhi recalled. “Today, Gaurav [Gogoi] told me that Zubeen ji called himself Kanchenjunga and it immediately connected because he had those same qualities".
Gandhi also planted a nahor (Indian rose chestnut) sapling, a tree Garg was particularly fond of, at the cremation ground.
After paying his respects, Gandhi visited Garg’s family home in Kahilipara, where he spent time consoling the bereaved family members. He emphasized the importance of uncovering the truth behind the singer’s death.
Quotes
· “It’s a tragedy that the whole state has faced. I spoke to the family and they only said one thing to me: ‘We have lost our Zubeen and all we want is the truth to be clear.’ It is the duty of the government to quickly investigate what happened in Singapore and tell the family the whole truth,” Gandhi stated.
· “Zubeen Garg’s family and the people of Assam have the right to know what happened to him. The sooner the truth comes out, the better, as his family needs closure,” he added.

Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival Postponed
In a heartfelt tribute to Garg, organizers of the 10th Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival announced the postponement of this year’s event. The festival, deeply rooted in Assamese culture has been a significant platform for celebrating regional cinema for a decade.
“We cannot imagine holding this festival without Zubeen. This festival represents the cultural roots of Assam and holding it without him would be like conducting an event without our own son,” the organizers stated. All ticket holders will receive full refunds and a decision about next year’s festival will be made later.
Massive Online Movement for Justice
The hashtag #JusticeForZubeGarg has taken social media by storm, crossing 1 million usages within days of its launch. The online movement, initiated by Assamese actress Amrita Gogoi has exploded into one of the most powerful digital campaigns in Northeast India’s history.
Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg and his sister, Dr. Palmee Borthakur, have joined the movement, amplifying the demand for truth and transparency. Garima’s Facebook post alone received over 95,000 likes, 73,000 comments and 16,000 shares.
The campaign has united thousands of fans, artists, politicians and ordinary citizens across India and globally. Prominent figures like Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi and Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi have also lent their voices to the movement.
Impact Analysis
Zubeen Garg was not just a singer—he was Assam’s cultural icon, a voice that transcended language, religion and region. Over his 33-year career, he sang in more than 40 languages and dialects, creating a bridge between Assam’s rich folk heritage and modern music.
His 2006 Bollywood hit “Ya Ali” from the film Gangster catapulted him to national fame. However, for the people of Assam, he represented much more—a symbol of hope, resilience and identity during times of political unrest.
Garg’s sudden death has left an irreplaceable void. The state of Assam observed three days of mourning and his cremation was conducted with full state honors and a 21-gun salute, attended by hundreds of thousands of mourners.
The ongoing investigation has sparked widespread public interest and concern. Fans and family members refuse to believe that his death was a mere accident, demanding answers and accountability.
Conclusion
The death of Zubeen Garg remains shrouded in mystery with investigations ongoing in both Singapore and Assam. While Singapore police maintain there is no immediate evidence of foul play, the Assam CID continues to probe deeper into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit and demand for transparency have reignited public attention on the case, reminding authorities that millions are watching and waiting for the truth. As the investigations progress over the next three months, one thing is certain: Assam will not rest until it knows what truly happened to its beloved son.
Zubeen Garg may have left this world but his music, his message and his legacy will forever echo in the hearts of millions.
